Most of the articles within the scope of theEuropean UnionWikiProject should use the EU English outlined in the latestEuropean Commission English guide.

General Principles:

• Follow standard Irish/British spelling.
• Use the -is- spelling.
• Write gram, kilogram (not gramme, kilogramme). However, use tonne not ton.
• Write metre for the unit of length, meter for measuring instruments.

Why?
The European Union is a multilingual union that draws on diverse English traditions. Irish English, British English, and even continental influences all shape the English language in the EU. Adopting this style accommodates EU-wide readership, and provides a consistent, neutral standard that avoids privileging any single national variety. It balances clarity, precision, and accessibility across all EU languages while reflecting the Union’s unique linguistic environment.
