Sub-project of WikiProject Molecular Biology

Welcome to the Molecular and Cell Biology taskforce ofWikiProject Molecular Biology.
If you have any questions about articles or are generally seeking advice, you're encouraged to ask at thetalkpage of WikiProject Molecular Biology, the centralized point for discussion, thank you.

Scope

Thisproject aims to improve and organise articles related tomolecular andcell biology on Wikipedia. If you would like to help, feel free to add yourself to thelist of participants, drop by ourdiscussion page or just look over theHow you can help section below.

Goals

Collect and organize the wealth of information indatabases and academic journals on genomes, proteomes and biological functions to ensure that it is accessible to both researchers and laypeople
Improve articles tofeatured article status, especiallyvital articles, with a particular focus on subjects that are discussed at the primary and secondary school level
Create a standard system for presenting the information about the proteins and cells that are discussed in Wikipedia articles

How the project can help you

[edit]

Discuss

Our discussion page is a great hub for asking advice, bringing up ideas, suggesting articles for creation, and requesting reviews

Advice & Resources

We keep a collection ofadvice & resources pages on the challenges of writing science and molecular biology Wikipedia articles

Assessment & Statistics

Automatically updated lists of articles and significant updates can help you keep on top of important events and find stubs to expand

How you can help the project

[edit]

Improve our articles

Add Infoboxes – Help to standardise the data presented onprotein articles
Add images – Diagrams and figures are particularly important to science articles so you can look at ourdiagram guide for standardising protein and cell figures, or ask for help in creating and updating pictures on theTalk page
Add references – Reliable citations are needed articles to be averifiable source of information

Collaboration – Contribute to a team effort by participating in the collaborations that come up on our talk page to improve relevant articles tofeatured article status
Label articles of interest – Add pages to the project by putting the following template on the talk pages of all articles of interest to molecular and cell biology:

{{WikiProject Molecular Biology|class=|importance=|MCB=yes|MCB-imp=<!--MCB importance-->}}

Adopt a stub – There are many, many stubby MCB articles that have potential, seeCategory:Molecular and cellular biology stubs orCategory:Stub-Class MCB articles.
Categorisation – Add protein articles to thelist of types of proteins and place them in theproteins category or one of its subcategories.
Recruitment – Assist inpublic relations and outreach by recruiting editors interested in molecular and cell to contribute to Wikipedia.
Clean up articles – There is a list of articles requiring clean up atclean-up listing for Molecular_and_Cell_Biologythe tool's wiki page
Create new articles

New gene stubs forWP:notable genes can be created using a tool:
  1. Look up the "Gene ID" number onNCBI Gene for a missing gene entry inHomo sapiens
  2. Append that number tohttp://genewiki.sulab.org/wiki/article/create/ (e.g.,TAAR9:134860http://genewiki.sulab.org/wiki/article/create/134860/)
  3. Navigate to that url, click "Toggle Stub Code", and copy/paste the output into a new Wikipedia article about the gene
