Tip of the day...
Section editing

If you havecreated an account, you might notice little [edit] links on some pages. An [edit] link is shown for every heading on a page. Sometimes you will see two edit links per heading ([edit|edit source]). In that case, the [edit] link will launch theVisualEditor, aWYSIWYG editor, and the [edit source] link will launch atext based editor. You can create a level 2 heading by typing ==Headline==, a level 3 heading by typing===Headline===, and so on, all the way up to level 5. Level 1 headings are reserved for system use only. The [edit] link lets you edit only the text that is below this heading and above the next one. This is especially useful for longtalk (discussion) pages. If you do not like the [edit] links, you can turn them off in your userPreferences by disabling the VisualEditor. If you use a modernweb browser, you also can enable the optionEnable section editing by right clicking on section titles instead of, or in addition to,Enable section editing via [edit] links.

If you want to create a new section at the bottom of a talk page, click theNew Section link in the navigation links under the headingThis Page. Bonus tip: In your user Preferences underEditing you can enable section [edit] links for the lead section of articles too. Be sure tosave your changes.

Shortcuts

This is thetip of the day (a.k.a.TOTD) project, providing useful daily advice on how to use or develop Wikipedia more effectively. This project is responsible for maintaining theWikipedia:Tip of the day#Tip templates, and the collection of daily tips that are displayed by those templates.

History

[edit]

The Tip of the Day was started onFebruary 18, 2004 as an original feature of the newly createdCommunity Portal. There were about 50 tips, displayed one per day, on a rotating basis.

In 2006, the project was revamped and expanded to a tip page for each day of the year. Later that year, a "yearless tip" was created, with no year included in the page titles, so that the same pages could be displayed automatically year after year. The tip collection grew to about 300 tips - still about 66 tips short of a full supply.

The tip of the day was added to the main help page,Help:Contents, onMarch 13, 2006. That page was renamed on September 20, 2012, toHelp:Menu, to make way for a new main help page. In 2015, the tip of the day project underwent an overhaul, during which the display template functionality was enhanced and simplified, many new tips were added, replacing obsolete and duplicate tips. The tip of the day was added to the current help page on November 22, 2015.

Over the years, Tip of the Day project regulars, and other helpful editors have maintained the set of auto-displaying tips, updating them, and creating new tips to replace redundant or obsolete tips.

Check the prominent locations

[edit]

The three main places that theTip of the Day is displayed, are theCommunity portal page (since 02/18/2004), theHelp:Contents page (the top-level help page), and theHelp:Menu (this was Help:Contents until 09/20/2012).

Sometimes the tip gets removed from those pages, either through vandalism or by an overly bold edit. If you notice it missing from any of them, please put it back. Thank you.

Where to write about current events

Thecurrent events portal is used to describe current world-wide events of note, not just inpolitics, but also inscience, culture, technology, sports, entertainment and many other areas. The information in question should be added to any relevant articles as well. However, Wikipedia doesnot offer first-handnews reports on breaking stories (useWikinews for that). Instead, thein the news section on our Main Page mentions and links toentries of timely interest that are (and this is crucial) nonethelessencyclopedia articles that have beenupdated to reflect an important current event.Non-Administrators can suggest items or changes to thisMain Page section by editingthe candidates page, from which administrators will update the live template from time to time.

To add this auto-updating template to your user page, use{{totd-day-after-next}}

Note: with{{totd-tomorrow}}, it isn't tomorrow for all time zones, and so it may have already gone live for part of the world before you've edited it.
