WELE (1380AM) is acommercialradio station broadcasting aprogressive news/talkradio format.Licensed toOrmond Beach, Florida, United States, the station serves theDaytona Beach metropolitan area. The station is owned byBethune-Cookman University.[4] It is branded as "1380 The Cat".

By day, WELE broadcasts with 5,000watts, but to avoid interference to other stations on1380 AM, at night it reduces power to 2,500 watts. It uses adirectional antenna with a four-tower array.[5] Programming is also heard on 10-wattFM translatorW268DG at 101.5MHz.

WELE carries a number ofnationally syndicated talk shows, includingRuss Parr,Stephanie Miller andDemocracy Now. WELE also broadcasts Bethune-Cookman Universityfootball andNFL games during the football season. World and national news is supplied byCBS News Radio.

History

On August 1, 1957; 67 years ago (1957-08-01), the station firstsigned on the air.[6] It originally held thecall sign WQXQ.[6][1] It was adaytimer, with a power of 1,000 watts and required to go off the air at sunset.[1] Seeking identification with its target area, in 1969 the call sign was changed to WDAT.[1] The DAT stood forDaytona.

Nighttime operations were added in 1973, running 1,000 watts around the clock.[1] In 1977, the station's daytime power was increased to 5,000 watts, and its nighttime power was increased to 2,500 watts.[1] Its call sign was changed to WELE in 1986.[2]

Former logo

In October 2013, Wings Communications donated the station's license toBethune-Cookman University.[7] The donation was consummated on August 5, 2014.
