Vegetarian bacon, also referred to asveggie bacon,vegan bacon,vegan rashers,vacon, orfacon (a portmanteau of "fake" and "bacon"), is aplant-based imitation ofbacon.[1]

Nutrition

It is high inprotein andfiber, yet low infat, and has nocholesterol. Many vegan bacon products are lower in salt than pork bacon, and some have less than 10% of the fat.[2] Two slices of one particular brand average 310 kilojoules (75 kilocalories) offood energy.[3]

In 2015, theMedia Wales reported vegan restaurant Anna Loka in Cardiff served vegan rashers.[7] In 2021,Aldi supermarkets in the United Kingdom added No Pork Streaky Bacon Rashers.[8]Sainsbury's soldvegan sausages wrapped in vegan rashers during Christmas 2021.[9] In 2023,Burger King added vegan bacon, made by La Vie Bakon, to its UK menus.[10][11]

Welsh chefGaz Oakley makes a vegan version ofbacon bits fromcoconut flakes.[12] TheBangor Daily News reported that vegan expertAvery Yale Kamila said homemade vegan bacon can be made from shiitake mushrooms, rice paper, coconut, eggplant, or banana peels.[13] American musicianLizzo uses maple syrup to cook vegan bacon.[14]

Vegetarian bacon can also be made at home by marinating strips oftempeh ortofu in various flavorings, such assoy sauce orliquid smoke, and then either frying or baking.[3]Aficionados ofraw food also usecoconut meat as a bacon substitute.[15]Seitan can also be formed into vegetarian bacon.[16][17][18]

Food writerDavid Goldbeck suggests fryingprovolone cheese in a skillet to produce a bacon substitute he calls "cheeson".[19]

Plant based recipes for vegetarian bacon often utilise seitan[20] orrice paper.[21] Flavourings includeliquid smoke,nutritional yeast,smoked paprika, andbarbecue sauce.
