Technical news

  • Starting on November 4, the IP addresses of logged-out editors are no longer being publicly displayed. Instead, they will have atemporary account associated with their edits.
  • Administrators will now find thatSpecial:MergeHistory is now significantly more flexible about what it can merge. It can now merge sections taken from the middle of the history of the source (rather than only the start) and insert revisions anywhere in the history of the destination page (rather than only the start).T382958

[edit]

Hi, JB, and happy holidays. Mind getting some trollery out of the page history for my User Talk?   –Skywatcher68 (talk)15:14, 10 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Contested R3 speedy deletion ofPresident of Belgium

[edit]

Hi JBW,You recently speedy-deleted a redirect after it was contested by two different editors, including myself. My reason was that it was controversial and should be sent to RfD instead for the Wikipedia community to decide its usefulness. There is currently ongoing discussion there on two similar redirects,President of the United Kingdom andPrime Minister of the United States, both of which have also been discussed repeatedly in the past. Given this history, I don’t believe speedy deletion was appropriate in this case. While I personally would like to see this page deleted, there are other editors that have made the argument that these non-existent head of state or government redirects are helpful for readers who are mistaken about what kind of leadership a country has. I respectfully request that you undelete this redirect so it can be evaluated by the community at RfD. Thanks,I2Overcometalk23:39, 10 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@I2Overcome: Sorry, I failed to check the talk page, which of course I should have done. It would, however, have been more helpful to have removed the speedy deletion tag if you wished to contest the nomination. I've restored the redirect.JBW (talk)00:00, 11 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I did not re-create the redirect; that wasUser:Candidyeoman55. I thought you were not supposed to contest a speedy deletion by just removing the template?I2Overcometalk00:19, 11 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Never mind, I misread it. I’ll remove the template and send it to RfD.I2Overcometalk00:20, 11 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes,I2Overcome I originally made the mistake of thinking you had made the redirect, but then I realised it wasn't you.JBW (talk)00:54, 11 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
All good.I2Overcometalk08:41, 11 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

You forgot to notify the AN3 report that presumably led to this block. –LaundryPizza03 (d)11:34, 13 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@LaundryPizza03: Actually, no, it didn't: I found the temp account by a completely different route. However, I did then discover the edit warring report, and respond to it, but it took time. There were several tasks to be done, such as writing a block notice on the temp account talk page, and it all takes time, particularly as I am editing on a phone, which is slow. I was in fact in the process of writing a closing message for the edit warring report when you posted here.JBW (talk)11:52, 13 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Unblocked editor lying and ignoring your instructions

[edit]

Can I draw your attention to these items with the editorGaurang Space Agency? Inthis previous version of their talk page, before the editorblanked it, the first two points you raised were:

  • I have unblocked you, in response to UTRS appeal #109079, where you said "I ... will avoid creating content about myself or projects I am connected to. I will use a neutral username".
  • Don't edit anywhere apart from this page before your username is changed, because if you do there's a danger that you may be blocked again.

Nine minutes after this editor requested a change of name above, theirvery next edit was to createUser talk:Gaurang Space Agency/sandbox/Gaurang Space Agency, about their organization. Four minutes later, their next edit was to createDraft:Gaurang Space Agency, again about their organization, and submit it to AfC. So, they have lied about what they intended to do and wilfully defied your instructions. Based on that, I believe a re-block is in order. --Drm310🍁 (talk)03:33, 15 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Drm310: Thanks. I actually thought there might sooner or later be some kind of slipping away from their promise, so I intended to keep an eye on their editing, but I did not expect anything so stupidly blatant. How can theypossibly have not realised it would lead to an immediate restoration of the block???JBW (talk)10:17, 15 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
