Administrator Elections | Instructions for candidates

[edit]
Administrator Elections |Instructions for candidates

Thank you for choosing to run in the July 2025 administrator elections. This bulletin contains some important information about the next stages of the election process.

As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:

We are currently in the Housekeeping phase. Your candidate subpage will remain closed to questions and discussion. However, this is an excellent opportunity for you to recruit nominators (if you want them) and have them place their nomination statements, and a good time for you to answer the standard three questions, if you have not done so already. We recommend you spend this phase getting your candidate page polished and ready for the next phase.

The discussion phase will take place from July 18–22. Your candidate subpage will open to the public and they will be permitted to discuss you and ask you formal questions, in the same style as arequest for adminship (RfA). You are strongly encouraged to be around on those dates to answer the formal questions in a timely manner.

On July 23, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use theSecurePoll software to vote, which uses asecret ballot. Anyone can see who has voted, but not who they voted for. You are permitted and encouraged to vote in the election, including voting for yourself. Please note that the vote totals cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see your vote total during the election.

Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last for an indeterminate amount of time. This phase took approximately four days during the October 2024 election, but could take up to a week or two. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on theresults page (you may want to watchlist this page) and transcluded to themain election page. In order to be granted adminship, you must have received at least 70% support, calculated as support ÷ (support + oppose). Because this is a vote and not a consensus, there are nobureaucrat discussions ("'crat chats").

Any questions or issues can be asked on theelection talk page. Thank you for your participation as a candidate, and best of luck.

You're receiving this message because you are a candidate in the July 2025 administrator elections.

  • I suggest you consider offering a longer debrief of your experience with the AELECT2 process, and if you feel good about it, discuss it with the nice folks at the Signpost for publication. I consider you one of those wikipedians who have sidled up to greater responsibility gently and not jumped into it headlong; you did it in a manner respectful to the process. The Signpost-published debriefs are a window into the sysop process for readers who had no prior ambition. Wikipedians might well make themselves personally familiar with the sorts of folks who volunteer for the custodial toolset. I regard your success asthe process working as anticipated. Others might value your willingness to speak further about it. No pressure, especially while you're not quite yourself. But consider writing something down, even if just for your own reading. Four years from now you'll thank yourself for doing it. As always, best wishes to you and yours.BusterD (talk)21:09, 27 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I recently left a protection request on the page of Nasaiah Wanganeen-Milera since he was linked with a move to another team. I do not know how to request for protection to be lifted so im asking you since you had placed it.

The reason I want to request for it to be lifted is that he signed a new deal at the team he is at meaning he isNo longer linked to a move. This means my protection request is now invalid.

Please weigh in on theTalk:Rape_in_Islamic_law#Dispute_resolution_(third_opinion).

[edit]

I have produced now four sources agreeing with Leslie P. Pierce. It is not an undue claim. Punishment of rape is obviously important in this context and is prominently included in the article itself:Rape in Islamic law#Prosecution of rape orRape in Islamic law#Punishment of a convicted rapist. I thus propose this wording:

"According to theḤanafī school, crimes committed within thedar al-harb are not punishable by Islamic courts even if they returned to thedar al-Islam.[1] This includes war-time rape by soldiers.[2]Leslie P. Peirce writes that "The Ḥanafī school of Islamic law...tacitly sanctioned wartime rape by permitting the suspension of Sharī'a for Muslims outside “the domain of Islam”".[3] Neither the Mālikī nor the Shāfiʿī schools subscribed to this view.[3]"

Please weigh in on the discussion so that we can form a consensus. His whole argument is based on putting down Leslie P. Pierce as a source and I have produced numerous sources to attest to the claim now so it should be moot.John Not Real Name (talk)13:32, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

At this point, I think you two should take it toWP:DRN.Curbon7 (talk)22:46, 4 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I agree; it's gotten a bit out of hand @John Not Real Name.veko. (user |talk |contribs)23:54, 4 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
In an effort to settle it down I am bringing it up to you two again. You have accepted it is reliable and I have shown to you above and in the Talk page that it is a due claim which is of course relevant to the topic. Leslie P. Pierce is writing that permitting the suspension of Sharia for muslims outside the Domain of islam (Which is indeed what the hanafi school believes as I have shown.) meant that wartime rape wastacitly sanctioned. We are allowed to put forth scholarly views, both of you accept it is reliable and both of you have numerous sources that attest to the claim.John Not Real Name (talk)13:15, 5 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have even offered a compromise which removes text from Leslie P. Pierce:[2] and yet he still refuses on grounds that are nonsensical (The text I propose does not mention implying or allowing.):[3].John Not Real Name (talk)11:38, 10 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Why? You two still have not weighed in after I have presented the numerous sources that back up my point. As you can see above he is wrong and I am correct. Punishment of soldiers in the Domain of War during War-Time according to the hanafi school is not permitted and this includes if the soldier goes back to the Domain of islam. The other schools indeed do not accept this logic and would punish them. In fact he has gone as far as to admit it really as even he cannot deny it. He just insists that Leslie P. Pierce cannot conclude what she does for some reason (Even though it is factually correct that it was not punished.).
Furthermore, having actually gone through aWP:DRN recently I am not confident they will actually serve my or any interest (I did not even fail strictly speaking. Not enough people showed up and so it was dead and I have to wait half a year to bring it up again.). I am not inclined to accept that as a solution. Furthermore both of you accept the source is reliable and as I have shown the claim is due and is most definitely relevant. So please chip in.John Not Real Name (talk)13:08, 5 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I offered a compromise which removes Leslie P. Pierce's text:[4] and he still refuses on nonsensical grounds (The text I propose does not mention implying or allowing.):[5].

Sorry, I am travelling and haven't had much time for Wikipedia recently. I think that talk page discussion is beyond unproductive at the point. While I understand you may have previously had a bad experience at DRN, at the very least it limits you both to a word count and a look at the current noticeboard indicates it is fairly active.Curbon7 (talk)18:47, 10 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Veko Picking up my request is fine but other than the three others (Who opposed my proposal by the way.) and was originally invited no-one else contributed. This means there isno consensus and I have to wait six months. Sorry but such a system does not seem to me to be good for anything. I have begun aWikipedia:Neutral point of view. I notified both of you and him as I was supposed to. Katie and Orbie protection

[edit]

I think this page needs to be kept protected for much longer than the time it expires. This page has been persistently targeted by the same IP vandal (whose IP address keeps constantly changing) who keeps constantly adding the same disruptive edits, and never ceases. I strongly do not believe a short-term semi-protection will help at this moment; the page needs a longer protection...about a year at minimum is my suggestion.Loyalmoonie (talk)17:52, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

From my comment atWikipedia:In the news/Candidates/August 2025 on 25 August:This source, which is the one that makes the first arranger claim, statesmaking music history as one of Türkiye's first female arrangers, while the article statesearning her the distinction of being music history as one of Türkiye's first female arrangers.[6] statesreceived the title of the first female orchestra conductor in the history of Turkish pop music while the article statesearning the title of the first female orchestra conductor in the history of Turkish pop music. There are also major grammar errors to the point some sentences just make no sense, and sourcing is all over the place, with citations strewn about randomly and not where they are supposed to be.
These issues may or may not have been fixed withthis edit.Curbon7 (talk)03:36, 5 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't make much sense that this was semi protected forever and it was already on pending changes. Please make this temporary as it's a dumb protection. Plus you removed move protection with that protection2600:1016:B0E1:3661:D0CE:9580:27CF:676C (talk)22:06, 8 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I stand behind the semi indef. Practically every single IP/non-autoconfirmed edit since 1 year PC expired in January has been vandalism/disruption. You are welcome to challenge this atWP:RFPPD. I would also note that a look at the protection log indicates the article has not been move protected since it expired in August 2023.Curbon7 (talk)00:40, 9 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Page deletion

[edit]

Hi

You recently deleted a page I prepared because I am not extended confirmed. I wrote this article with the help of another Wikipedia user who is extended confirmed (We were both not aware ofWP:CT/A-I for non-extended confirmed users). Since this is a joint effort (the other user has been helping me and mentoring me as I learn the ropes around here), is it OK if I pass the article so that she will post it on her account? Just checking to make sure it's not violating any other guideline, as obviously I'm not aware of all of them :-).

Thanks.

Moves to mainspace

[edit]

Hello! I noticed you moved a bunch of articles byUser:Kirondenian to mainspace. While they may meet notability standards, the original author engaged in UPE and was blocked as a sockpuppet. Possible COI/UPE and promotional contentare also valid reasons to draftify articles. I hope you reconsider, considering that some of the articles have statements likeHe was a vocal critic of government policies that he perceived as oppressive or unjust and most are sourced entirely to paid placement sources (the Ugandan equivalent ofWP:NEWSORGNIGERIA.)ChildrenWillListen (🐄 talk,🫘 contribs)02:10, 17 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Neutrality concern

[edit]

Hello @Curbon7,Thank you for extending the protection onOswal. However, it seems the last edit made by the blocked IP VPN using was not reverted before the lock. That edit is not neutral and goes against Wikipedia’s content policies. Could you please review the page?

Thanks for your help! ~~Starry Pine (talk)09:59, 23 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Starry Pine, reverted as an edit made by a non-ECR editor in an ECP topic area; I have no opinion on the content of the edit itself.Curbon7 (talk)22:08, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Please check the source itself. This is not a neutrality concern. The user has been trying to push their POV on several pages. You can check multiple sources across the web. This user's view isWP:FRINGE and not fit to be on that page. In fact, originally, it was not even there since a long time. They are trying to push their POV and have flouted policies on multiple pages. I request you to please verify. Also, this user is also a non-ECP editor. Isn't it best to keep the version that was before they tried to disrupt it?2409:4080:1085:427C:5CED:E7E4:CBB2:6EEE (talk)01:22, 25 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You may also check the source:[7]. This website is held by the primary community that page is about, i.e. Oswals. They have clearly mentioned about Oswal's founding father as AcharyaRatnaprabhasuri, who was a Svetambara Jaina monk. Then, in logic, it is not possible that Oswal Jains are non-Svetambara.2409:4080:1085:427C:5CED:E7E4:CBB2:6EEE (talk)01:33, 25 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
For your information, many Oswals in Rajasthan follow the Digambara sect, particularly Basridas, so why did you add onlySvetambara merchant community? I know AcharyaRatnaprabhasuri is an important founder, but we also need to reflect others in the Oswal community who follow Digambara practices. Wikipedia is an open encyclopedia, and neutrality requires including perspectives from both sects. please check i have also added:"while the majority of Oswals follow Svetambara practices."
Also, please note this is not the right place to discuss on an admin’s talk page. The admin already told you they have no opinion on this content, and you should readWP:WRONGVERSION. TheOswal content was reverted by the admin only because the last edit was made by a blocked IP before the page was locked.
If you want to raise these issues, you should do it on theTalk:Oswal, or we can discuss further on my talk page.
thankyou. ~~Starry Pine (talk)04:01, 25 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
As I mentioned, I have no opinion of the dispute or content itself. All I have done is enforce thecontentious topics sanctions imposed on the area byWP:ARBCOM, which stipulate that articles related to castes and South Asian social groups may not be edited by non-extended confirmed editors. You may still, of course, use the article's talk page to discuss improvements to the article and fileedit requests.Curbon7 (talk)03:52, 25 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. However, I just wanted to highlight that even the user who requested you to edit it back is NOT extended confirmed user. Moreover, the content was so since a long time. They were the one to disrupt it.2409:4081:29C:987C:9C49:A898:5918:E5A9 (talk)04:12, 25 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi, you left a warning (as did I) on YuvrajKThon's talk. Not to dispute that, but I've gone ahead and just blocked them. (Not quite sure, in hindsight, why I didn't do that straight away.) There's some sort of LTA campaign going on with these burner user accounts (poss. bots) posting airline/airport customer service information all over es.wiki and en.wiki. Next time you see that, just block on sight. Cheers, --DoubleGrazing (talk)08:25, 25 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting info/ guidance

[edit]

Hi,

Greetings @Curbon7, Came across your protection to the articleSethupathi as such I am quite ok with the protection. Such type of protection is bit new to me and I work on south Asian topics like mentioned below. Last some months I was absent from WP due to RL, so just I wish to update myself if any new rules are applicable on South Asian drafts or while taking drafts to Main name space?

I do have couple of drafts that would link to Sethupathis likeUser:Bookku/Indian sceptre andDraft:Ramalinga Vilasam palace deleted along with good number of other drafts too in my last some months absence as G13. (For eg. Draft:Ramalinga Vilasam palace is well developed but usually I write through extensive work in draft namespace over many months/ years).

Thanks Bookku (talk)12:01, 26 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

WP:CT/SA stipulates that topics related to South Asian social groups (i.e. castes) and Indian military history are placed under extended-confirmed restriction. As you are an extended confirmed editor, you are able to edit in this topic area. Additionally, if you wish to recover your drafts, seeWP:RFUD.Curbon7 (talk)23:39, 26 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I would not mind WP:CT/SA protection, if applicable, if not you may think of adding to your watch list, the following articlesReligious education in Kerala,Misha Japanwala,Mansiya V. P.. Though the last two are bios of individuals, they have contested existing social aspects in their own ways. Bookku (talk)03:16, 27 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Neutrality Issue

[edit]

Lift protections for Gary Cohen’s page. I had a paragraph stating; “On September 23rd, 2025, Cohen made controversary by stating Chicago Cub's player Matt Shaw's decision for attending a funeral of his close friend was "weird". This friend happened to be political activist Charlie Kirk who was murdered in front of his wife and children some-two weeks prior. Cohen refused to apologize for his comments and has been described as being political during his tenure as a sports broadcaster. Source, (Yahoo News. (n.d.). 64.233.215.115 (talk) 14:09, 26 September 2025 (UTC)”This was all true information and should be listed on his page since there is demands for the broadcaster to be terminated.64.233.215.115 (talk)15:51, 26 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I do not know whoGary Cohen nor do I care what he did. The reason I protected the article is not because ofcontent but because ofconduct. Many IP editors were disruptively editing or addingunreferenced content, so I implemented a short protection period; we take unreferenced content very seriously, especially when it comes toliving people. You may still submitedit requests on the article's talk page.Curbon7 (talk)23:34, 26 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Re-protection on Military Junta?

[edit]

Hi Curbon7; a couple of months ago you protected themilitary junta article; this expired on Sept. 28. Due to the current events taking place with the attempted coup/mutiny in Madagascar, themilitary junta article is now getting an influx of attention, which is bringing multiple editors adding Madagascar to that list without providing any sources stating that the regime is a military junta. Would you mind reinstating the protection for a temporary period (2 weeks is probably sufficient for sources to have made up their mind and refer to it as such if they're ever going to). Guide to temporary accounts

[edit]

Hello, Curbon7. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have atemporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with thetemporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

Editing from a temporary account
  • When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern:~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
  • All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
  • A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with thetemporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
  • As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
    • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
    • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

  • It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects theautoblock option.
  • It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
  • Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. OnSpecial:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should useSpecial:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

  • Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access isgenerally not allowed (e.g.~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
  • Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g.~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward3RR, but notHey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)
  • SeeWikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.

Useful tools for patrollers

  • It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via theUser Info card, available inPreferences →Appearance →Advanced options →TickEnable theuser info card
    • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
  • Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
  • Similarly,Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
  • The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.

[edit]

Hello Curbon7:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding amonth longBacklog Drive in December!
The goal of this drive is toreduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than half a month of outstanding reviews from the current 2+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 December 2025 through 31 December 2025.

You may findCategory:AfC pending submissions by age orother categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.
There is a backlog of over 3000 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help!MediaWiki message delivery (talk)06:07, 23 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator Elections - Call for Candidates

[edit]

The administrator elections process has officially started! Interested editors are encouraged to self-nominate or arrange to be nominated by reviewing the instructions atWikipedia:Administrator elections/December 2025/Candidates.

Here is the schedule:

  • November 25 – December 1 - Call for candidates
  • December 4–8 - Discussion phase
  • December 9–15 - SecurePoll voting phase

Please note the following:

  • The requirements to run are identical toRFA—a prospective candidate must beextended confirmed.
  • Prospective candidates are advised to become familiar with the community's expectations of administrators, which are much higher than the minimum requirement of having extended confirmed status. This includes reviewingsuccessful andunsuccessful RFAs, reading the essayWikipedia:Advice for admin elections candidates, and possibly requesting anoptional poll on their chances of passing.
  • The process will have a seven day call for candidates phase, a two day pause, a five day discussion phase, and a seven day private vote using SecurePoll. Discussion and questions are only allowed on the candidate pages during the discussion phase.
  • The outcome of this process is identical to making a request for adminship. There isno official difference between an administrator appointed through RFA versus administrator elections.
  • Administrator elections are also avalid means of regaining adminship for de-sysopped editors.

Ask any questions about the process at thetalk page. Later, a user talk message will be sent to official candidates with additional information about the process.

If you are interested in the process, please make sure to watchlist the appropriate pages. A watchlist notice will be added when the discussion phase opens, and again when the voting phase opens.

Administrator Elections - Discussion Phase

[edit]

The discussion phase of the December 2025 administrator elections is officially open. As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:

  • Dec 4–8 - Discussion phase (we are here)
  • Dec 9–15 - SecurePoll voting phase
  • Scrutineering phase

We are currently in the discussion phase. The candidate subpages are open to questions and comments from everyone, in the same style as arequest for adminship. You may discuss the candidates atWikipedia:Administrator elections/December 2025/Discussion phase.

On December 9, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use theSecurePoll software to vote, which uses asecret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for. Please note that the vote totals cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see an individual candidate's totals during the election. You must beextended confirmed to vote.

Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which typically lasts between a couple days and a week. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on theresults page (you may want to watchlist this page) and transcluded to themain election page. In order to be granted adminship, a candidate who has not beenrecalled must have received at least 70.0% support, calculated as Support / (Support + Oppose), and must also have received a minimum of 20 support votes. A candidate that has been recalled must have at least55.0% support. Because this is a vote and not a consensus, there are nobureaucrat discussions ("crat chats").

Any questions or issues can be asked on theelection talk page. Thank you for your participation. Happy electing.
