Anatomical terminology |
Thetransverse humeral ligament (Brodie's ligament) forms a broad band bridging thelesser andgreater tubercle of the humerus.[1] Its attachments are limited superior to theepiphysial line. By enclosing the canal of thebicipital groove (intertubercular groove), it functions to hold thelong head of the biceps tendon within the bicipital groove.
Studies usingMRIs, cadaver dissections, and histological analysis suggest that the transverse humeral ligament may not actually be aligament, but simply a portion of the tendon of thesupraspinatus muscle often mistaken for a separate ligament during dissections.[2]
