Tom McGuinness (artist)

British coal miner and artist

Tom McGuinness (1926–2006) was a British coal miner and artist.[1] At 18 he was conscripted as aBevin Boy during World War II, and later studied at theDarlington School of Art,[2] and was one of the artists at theSpennymoor Settlement, where his contemporaries includedNorman Cornish,Herbert Dees andRobert Heslop.[3][4] In 1957 an oilThe Miners' Bus was included as one of the 'Young Artists of Promise' inJack Beddington's book.[5]

In 2018Frances O'Grady, General Secretary of theTrades Union Congress, exhibited his painting of Murton colliery inCounty Durham in her office.[6] This is the same county as the other places mentioned (above) in his career.
