Tiyas (Arabic:التياس, also known asal-SafaArabic:الصفا) is a village in centralSyria, administratively part of theHoms Governorate, east ofHoms. It is situated in theSyrian Desert, and the closest localities areTadmur (Palmyra) to the east, the subdistrict center ofal-Qaryatayn to the southwest,Furqlus to the west andUqayribat to the northwest. According to theCentral Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Tiyas had a population of 2,564 in the 2004 census.[1]
Tiyas is also near theSyrian Air Force base of the same name which lies just to the southwest. During the 1970s and 1980s, theSoviet Union was given access to theTiyas Military Airbase for the periodical deployment of naval aircraft.[2] The base at Tiyas was also used to patrol theUnited States' naval fleet in theEastern Mediterranean Sea.[3]
