TheLeeward Antilles (Dutch:Benedenwindse Eilanden;Spanish:islas de Sotavento) are a chain ofislands in theCaribbean, specifically part of the southerly islands of theLesser Antilles (and, in turn, theAntilles and theWest Indies) along the southeastern fringe of theCaribbean Sea, just north of theVenezuelan coast of theSouth American mainland. The Leeward Antilles, while among the Lesser Antilles, are not to be confused with theLeeward Islands (also of the Lesser Antilles) to the northeast.

Largely lacking involcanic activity, the Leeward Antillesisland arc occurs along the deformed southern edge of theCaribbean Plate and was formed by the plate'ssubduction under theSouth American Plate.Recent studies indicate that the Leeward Antilles areaccreting toSouth America.
