In modern Tatar language there is a rule of how it is heard and written. In Old Tatar there is no such rule for Tatar and the language is subject to the rules of the Arabic and Tatar languages. "Turki" is a more general term. There were different versions of the Turki - Chagatai, Ottoman, Old Tatar, etc. All of them were formed on the basis of the Karakhanid language. Old Tatar was formed on the territory of the Golden Horde (or a little earlier than Golden Horde was esteblished, but spread already in the Horde). Turks is not quite a correct name, since under the Turks many languages are meant, including the Chuvash, the only living "r" dialect of the Turks.
