Frequently asked questions
Controversies, praise, and criticism
Q1: Why isn't there a criticisms/controversies section?
A1: Because a section dedicated to criticisms and controversies is no more appropriate than a section dedicated solely to praises and is an indication of a poorly written article. Criticisms/controversies/praises should be worked into the existing prose of the article, perWP:CRIT.
Q2: Why isn't a certain controversy/criticism/praise included in this article?
A2: Wikipedia'sNeutral Point of View policy says that "All Wikipedia articles and other encyclopedic content must be written from a neutral point of view, representing fairly, proportionately, and as far as possible without bias, all significant views that have been published by reliable sources. This is non-negotiable and expected of all articles and all editors." Criticism or praise that cannot bereliably sourced cannot be placed in a biography. Also, including everything about MacArthur in a single article would exceed Wikipedia's article size restrictions. A number of sub-articles have been created and some controversies/criticisms/praises have beensummarized here or been left out of this article altogether, but are covered in some detail in the sub-articles.
Q3: This article needs much more (or much less) criticism/controversy.
A3: Please try toassume good faith. Like all articles on Wikipedia, this article is a work in progress so it is possible for biases to exist at any point in time. If you see a bias that you wish to address, you are more than welcome to start a new discussion, or join in an existing discussion, but please be ready to provide sources to support your viewpoint and try to keep your commentscivil. Starting off your discussion by accusing the editors of this article of having a bias is the quickest way to get your comment ignored.
Other issues
Q4: This article is over 100kb long,WP:SIZE says that it should be broken up into sub-articles. Why hasn't this happened?
A4: The restriction mentioned in WP:SIZE is 100kB ofreadable prose (which corresponds to about 10,000 words), not the byte count you see when you open the page for editing. As of December 2023, this article had about 19,300 words of readable prose (114 kB according toprosesize tool),which is over the limit. The rest is mainlycitations and invisible comments, which do not count towards the limit.
Q5: I added something to the article but it got removed. Why?
A5: In all probability what you added was trivia, unsourced information or information cited to anunreliable source; such information is usually removed quickly. Articles on Wikipedia require reliable sources for an independent verification of the facts presented, consequently any information added to an article without a reliable source is subject to removal from the article at any Wikipedian's discretion.
Q6: I tried to edit this article but couldn't. Why?
A6: This article has been indefinitelysemi-protected due to persistentvandalism or violations ofcontent policy. Semi-protection prevents edits fromanonymous users (IP addresses), as well as edits from any account that is notautoconfirmed (is at least four days old and has ten or more edits to Wikipedia) orconfirmed. Semi FAR note

[edit]

Article has an active tag that its 19,500 word length would be an impediment to keeping its FA status and needs to be reduced by 25%. Additionally, there are unsourced stuff at Portrayal section and "importance" tag. 🍕BP!🍕 (🔔)09:46, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Better still, why don't we FAR every article with less than 10,000 words.Hawkeye7(discuss)10:02, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Boneless Pizza!: - Is there information that you think is off topic/UNDUE/overly detailed? It isn't really helpful to suggest an article needs FAR due to length when there's no statement of what material within the article is actually problematic.Hog Farmtalk01:41, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Slr. I just placed this "Semi" since I have no intention to put this article to FAR, but only note so that other editors can see if there are other potential issues. Anyway, It has an active tag. 🍕BP!🍕 (🔔)02:40, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The Portrayal section has been removed.Hawkeye7(discuss)02:46, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Is it possible for you to trim and remove the tag? That's only the main cincern article since the template contains an active tag. 🍕BP!🍕 (🔔)04:45, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The tag is there as a notification of the ongoing discussion.Hawkeye7(discuss)06:13, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Following up on this conversation, I agree with Boneless Pizza! that the article isWP:TOOBIG. This makes the article discouraging for me to read (even though I'm a history buff), difficult to find additional information about the most important aspects of MacArthur's biography, and could cause slow load times for some of our readers in more remote locations. Per Hog Farm's question above, here are some places that, after a quick skim, I think could bespun out or trimmed:

  • Various block quotes: I do not think the block quotes are adding much to the article. The various observations of MacArthur's personality could be summarised or removed, while MacArthur's observations of an event are not really encyclopedic, in my opinion.
  • The "Between the wars" section is quite large. I think this section can bespun out and reduced in this article.
  • The "Philippines campaign (1941–1942)", "New Guinea Campaign", and "Philippines Campaign (1944–45)" sections have hatnotes for the overarching article: I think much of this information can be moved there. If MacArthur's contribution to these events is notable perWP:GNG, perhaps we canWP:SPINOUT the information and have this article focus on the most important information. Regardless, this article can focus more specifically on MacArthur's actions and less on explaining the background of these conflicts, as readers can find out more information about the campaigns in their respective articles.
  • There's also a lot of information dedicated to his Medal of Honor, which might be too detailed. I don't think the block quotes are necessary in the prose.

I'll pause there, but my overall opinion is that this article can be even better if some information is moved to other articles so that our readers can discover the most important aspects of MacArthur's life.Z1720 (talk)14:46, 16 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Hawkeye7 andHog Farm: agree or disagree with the above?~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk)11:36, 28 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • MacArthur' contribution to these events is indeed notable perWP:GNG; had he died before World War II, he would still have a sizeable article. But of course it is World War II for which he is most famous. James divided his career into three large volumes: one for his career up to World War II, one for World War II, and one for the post-war. The article is similarly structured.
  • The Medal of Honor citation was added by an editor in conformance with the treatment of other winners, who all have their citations in full in their articles.
  • Some sections have already been spun out: hisservice summary, escape from the Philippines andrelief. The latter two are good examples of what is being asked for here: they are substantial articles in their own right, and the suggested subarticles would require a lot of work from an editor well-versed in the subject area.
  • The part of the article that has grown most over time has been the post-war, particularly on the occupation of Japan, although the World War I section has also been expanded. The issue here is partly that those articles are undeveloped. However, in the case of the relief, I created a substantial subarticle, but other editors still wanted more of the information placed here.
  • In sum, the article is long because the subject had an unusually long and varied career, and we don't know what aspect the reader is looking for information on.
Hawkeye7(discuss)19:02, 28 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Hawkeye7: If most of the added article prose has been the occupation of Japan and WWI information, then that might be a great place to start moving information to spun out articles. The spun-out articles do not need to be at FA quality, but that can be a fantastic goal to work towards eventually.
  • For the Medal of Honor citation:WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS, while written for deletion discussions, could be applicable here. Just because other award winners have the full quoted citation does not mean that this article should have it. If editors want to hold off cutting this information, I'm OK with that, but if the article is still too big, it might be a good place to cut prose.
  • Editors cannot predict what the reader wants to read about, but if the reader encounters a large article it will discourage them from reading anything or being able to find the information they are looking for. If editors want more specific information on a topic, they can click on the wikilink to read a more detailed, spun out article.Z1720 (talk)01:11, 10 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Boneless Pizza!,Hawkeye7, andAirshipJungleman29: I see that there is still disagreement about this issue. Would any of you be interested in bringing this to FAR, where more opinions can be given to get a resolution?Z1720 (talk)02:31, 22 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
