Sylvinite is asedimentary rock made of a mechanical mixture of the mineralssylvite (KCl, orpotassium chloride) andhalite (NaCl, orsodium chloride).[1][2] Sylvinite is the most important source for the production ofpotash inNorth America,Russia and theUK.[2][3] MostCanadian operations mine sylvinite with proportions of approximately 31% KCl and 66% NaCl with the balance being insolubleclays, anhydrite and in some locationscarnallite. Other deposits of sylvinite are located inBelarus,Brazil,France,Germany,Kazakhstan,Slovakia andSpain.[4]
