St Stephen's Tavern is apublic house in theCity of Westminster. It takes its name fromSt Stephen's Chapel in the nearbyPalace of Westminster, which was used as the chamber for theHouse of Commons of England.
It is one of the six pubs around Parliament with adivision bell to warn members of an impending vote.[1]
Prime ministers who have patronised the pub includeStanley Baldwin,Winston Churchill andHarold Macmillan.[2][3]
The current building was built in 1875. There had been previous pubs on the site but they were demolished during the construction ofWestminster tube station. The current pub closed in the 1980s when there was further extensive construction work for theJubilee line andPortcullis House. It reopened in 2003 after extensive renovation.[2]
