TheSiegerland is a region ofGermany covering the old district ofSiegen (now part of the district ofSiegen-Wittgenstein inNorth Rhine-Westphalia) and the upper part of the district ofAltenkirchen, belonging to theRhineland-Palatinate adjoining it to the west.

Geologically, the Siegerland belongs to theRhenish Massif (Rheinisches Schiefergebirge,Rhenish Slate Mountains). The point of highest elevation is theRiemen, at 678 metres above sea level. The riverSieg, a right tributary of the riverRhine, has its source in the town ofNetphen in theRothaar Mountains.

The region around thecity ofSiegen is centered in the middle ofGermany. It includes the municipalities ofHilchenbach,Netphen,Kreuztal,Freudenberg andSiegen, and the communities ofWilnsdorf,Burbach andNeunkirchen, all in North Rhine-Westphalia, and in the Rhineland-Palatinate the municipalities ofKirchen,Herdorf andBetzdorf, with the community ofDaaden. The population is approximately 300,000.[citation needed]

The region also has a dialectSiegerländisch which is spoken by many of its inhabitants.[1]
