TheHouse of Shishman (Bulgarian:Шишман), also referred to as theShishmanids orShishmanovtsi (Bulgarian:Шишмановци), was a medievalBulgarian dynasty ofTurkicCuman[1] origin. The House of Shishman ruled theSecond Bulgarian Empire from the proclamation ofMichael Asen III as emperor in 1323 to the deposition of his sonIvan Stephen in 1331 whereafter rule fell to theHouse of Sratsimir, who were matrilineal descendants of the Shishmanids.[2]
The Shishmanids were matrilineally descended from the earlierAsen dynasty[2] and may also have been related to the immediately precedingTerter dynasty.[3]
