Sandra Hüller (German:[ˈzandʁaˈhʏlɐ]; born 30 April 1978) is a German actress. She has appeared in German, Austrian, British, French, and American films. She has receivedvarious accolades, including twoEuropean Film Awards, aCésar Award and threeGerman Film Awards, along with nominations for anAcademy Award and twoBAFTA Awards.

Hüller has playedAnneliese Michel inHans-Christian Schmid's 2006 dramaRequiem, for which she won theSilver Bear for Best Actress, and a troubled daughter inMaren Ade's 2016 comedyToni Erdmann, for which she won her firstEuropean Film Award for Best Actress. She portrayedIrma Sztáray inFrauke Finsterwalder's 2023 historical black comedySisi & I.

International recognition came in 2023 for her starring roles inJustine Triet'slegal dramaAnatomy of a Fall andJonathan Glazer'sHolocaust dramaThe Zone of Interest. Her performances in the former won her another European Film Award and aCésar Award, in addition to a nomination for theAcademy Award for Best Actress.

Early life and education

Hüller was born inSuhl,Thuringia,[3] East Germany,[1] and grew up inOberhof andFriedrichroda, small villages in the heavily forested state of Thuringia.[4][5] She is the elder of two children,[6] with parents who were educators;[7] her father taught at a center for apprentices, her mother gave after-school tutoring.[5]

Hüller cut off her hair, dyed it red,[8] and joined a drama club as a teenager.[9] "I took part in the theatre workshop at school and really enjoyed it, but I never thought that it could be a profession for me. It was more of a hobby", Hüller said.[10] In high school,[7] Hüller had her stage debut with the 1996 productionWir Voodookinder directed byRobert Lehniger at theTheatertreffen der Jugend in Berlin.[11] From 1996, Hüller studied acting at theErnst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin,[12] graduating in 2003.[13][14]

After graduating, Hüller left Berlin and spent two years at a theatre southwest of Leipzig, then moved to Switzerland to join theTheater Basel.[7] Hüller speaks German, English, French and Spanish.[9]

Career

Hüller appeared from 1998 to 2001 at the Theaterhaus[15]Jena,Thuringia and then for one year at the Schauspiel[16][17][18] Leipzig. It was Oliver Held,[19] a playwright from Jena, who recommended her to the Theater Basel in Switzerland, where she appeared until 2006.[12]

In 2006, Hüller appeared as Michaela Klingler inHans-Christian Schmid's filmRequiem, for which she won the56th Berlin International Film Festival'sAward for Best Actress and her firstGerman Film Award.[20]

In 2009, Hüller appeared asElizabeth I, inVirgin Queen atPrater Volksbühne theatre,[21] and in the music-theater-showFor Love, directed by Tom Schneider, based on the works ofKurt Cobain andCourtney Love.[22][23]

In 2012, at the62nd Berlin International Film Festival, Hüller was – alongsideEmily Jacir andDavid OReilly – part of the jury that choseJustine Triet'sVilaine Fille Mauvais Garçon as the festival's best short film.[24]

From 2012 to 2015, Hüller was a member of the company[25] at theMunich Kammerspiele, where she worked with directorJohan Simons on several plays,[26] notablyElfriede Jelinek'sDie Straße. Die Stadt. Der Überfall. in 2013.[27]

In 2014, Hüller won theGerman Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Franziska Feldenhoven inFrauke Finsterwalder's filmFinsterworld.[28]

In 2016, Hüller co-founded the FARN.collective theater group.[29] She accepted the invitation to become a member of Berlin'sAcademy of Arts in 2017.[30]

In 2018, Hüller became a member of the company at theSchauspiel Bochum, again working with Johan Simons.[7] In 2018, she played the lead role in Simons' adaptation ofPenthesilea in Bochum and at theSalzburg Festival.[31]

In 2019, Hüller appeared in Johan Simons' award-winning, gender-switched version ofHamlet.[32][5] In 2019, Hüller was part of the69th Berlin International Film Festival's jury, chaired byJuliette Binoche.[33] Later in 2019, she appeared in two French films,Justine Triet'sSibyl, where she played film director Mika,[34] and inAlice Winocour'sProxima as the psychologist Wendy.[35]

In 2023, Hüller portrayed CountessIrma Sztáray in Frauke Finsterwalder's historical black comedy filmSisi & I, a retelling of the later years ofEmpress Elisabeth of Austria from the point of view of herlady-in-waiting. The film had its world premiere at the73rd Berlin Film Festival on 19 February 2023,[36] and was released in Germany on 30 March 2023.[37] Hüller was nominated for theGerman Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in the film.[38]

In 2023, Hüller starred in two films that premiered in main competition at the2023 Cannes Film Festival;[39] the Frenchlegal dramaAnatomy of a Fall byJustine Triet, which won thePalme d'Or,[40] and the American-British-PolishHolocaust dramaThe Zone of Interest byJonathan Glazer, which won theGrand Prix.[40] She won her secondEuropean Film Award for Best Actress forAnatomy of a Fall, while also being nominated forThe Zone of Interest.[41] She also earnedAcademy Award[42] andGolden Globe[43] nominations forAnatomy of a Fall, as well asBAFTA Film Award nominations for bothAnatomy of a Fall andThe Zone of Interest.[44] She also won theCésar Award for Best Actress forAnatomy of a Fall.[45]

In June 2024, Hüller was invited to become a member of theAcademy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.[46]

Hüller is scheduled to directPenthesile:a:s by Marie Dilasser at theNeues Theater Halle/Saale in 2025.[47]

Other activities

In 2024, Hüller appeared in the first-ever advertising campaign ofPhoebe Philo's eponymous fashion brand.[48][49]

In July 2024, Hüller christened the shipSea-Eye 5 for theSea-Eye NGO inAncona and criticized the European migration policy in an interview.[50]

Hüller lives inLeipzig-Plagwitz, Germany, with her daughter, who was born in 2011.[52][53]

Hüller is a licensed forklift operator, certified for a role in Thomas Stuber’sIn the Aisles.[13][54]

BesidesJulia Jentsch andPaula Beer, Hüller is the only German actress to win both theEuropean Film Award and theSilver Bear for Best Actress, top honors of theEuropean Film Academy andBerlin Film Festival, in the 21st century.[69][70]

ForAnatomy of a Fall (2023), Hüller became thethird German actress to be nominated for theAcademy Award forBest Actress, and the first German actress to be nominated sinceLuise Rainer in 1937.[71]
