Ryan Rodney Reynolds[1][2] was born inVancouver, British Columbia, on October 23, 1976.[3][4][5] His father, James Chester Reynolds, served as aRoyal Canadian Mounted Policeman before retiring and transitioning to work as afoods wholesaler.[6][7] His mother, Tamara Lee (née Stewart), worked in retail sales.[8][9] Reynolds has three older brothers—Patrick, Jeff, and Terry—and has described himself not as a younger brother to them, but a "moving target".[10] He has also shared that his brothers "protected him" from their father, with whom he had a complex and somewhat estranged relationship.[10][6] Reynolds's paternal grandfather,Chester, was a farmer who representedStettler in theLegislative Assembly of Alberta from 1940 to 1944.[11] Reynolds is of Irish descent[12] and was raised Catholic in Vancouver'sKitsilano neighborhood as well as inVanier, Ontario (now part of Ottawa).[4][13][14]
Reynolds has been involved in acting since the age of thirteen.[15] As a teenager, he attended acting classes—which he failed—and briefly held a day job as abusboy at a restaurant, while also working night shifts at a local grocery store in Vancouver.[16][17] He described his co-workers in the latter as "the funniest people on Earth" and called them "some of my biggest impressions[...] as a performer".[16][18] Reynolds attendedPrince of Wales Secondary School for grades nine and ten before getting expelled for stealing a teacher's car.[19][20][21] He attended grades eleven and twelve atKitsilano Secondary School alongside actorJoshua Jackson, graduating in 1994.[22][23] Reynolds initially took on minor roles in various television series but became discouraged and left acting at nineteen to enroll atKwantlen Polytechnic University. Reynolds began his career in 1991 in the Canadian teen soap operaHillside (1991–1993), which was distributed in the United States byNickelodeon under the titleFifteen. He portrayed Billy Simpson—a character who turned to bullying to cope with family issues and romantic rejections.[25][26][27] He made his feature film debut in thecoming-of-age dramaOrdinary Magic (1993) by playing Jeffrey, an orphan raised in India, who is inspired byMahatma Gandhi to go on a hunger strike in a small town in Canada.[28][29] Directed byGiles Walker, the film generally received both mixed and disappointing reviews;Variety's Paul Lenti thought that the script's "overall facile characterizations and predictable plot development detract from real tension".[29] Between 1993 and 1994, Reynolds took on the dual roles of Macro and Lee in the children's half-hour television seriesThe Odyssey.[30]
His breakthrough role was as medical student Michael "Berg" Bergen inTwo Guys and a Girl (1998–2001; initially titledTwo Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place).[43][44][45] Although the show was neither as critically or commercially successful as contemporary shows, Reynolds's performance received praise, withVariety—in a retrospective review—noting that his "talent and charisma [were] apparent" and that his "star quality was already in place".[46] He later took on the minor roles of Henry Lipschitz and Chip in the comediesComing Soon (1999) andDick (1999), respectively.[47][48] In the horror comedyBoltneck (2000), Reynolds starred as Karl, a bullied teenager who is killed and later revived by a "science nerd" named Frank Stein,[49] while he portrayed Quigley in the drama thrillerFinder's Fee (2001).[50] He played the titular character in the romantic comedyNational Lampoon's Van Wilder (2002), which was critically panned but achieved box office success.[51][52] Reynolds portrayed Mark Tobias in the critically and commercially unsuccessful action comedy filmThe In-Laws (2003). 2004–2009: Romantic comedies
Reynolds had a cameo appearance as the nurse inHarold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004), whichEntertainment Weekly described as a "single, though memorable scene".[55] Later that year, he made hisvoice acting debut in the animated television seriesZeroman (2004), lending his voice to former secret agent Ty Cheese.[56][57] Reynolds played the role ofHannibal King inDavid S. Goyer'sBlade: Trinity (2004), a vampire hunter who joinsBlade (Wesley Snipes) andAbigail Whistler (Jessica Biel) to battleDracula and the vampire clan.[58][59] To prepare for the role, Reynolds focused on gaining muscle mass, training six days a week and adhering to a 3,200-calorie diet. Reynolds starred as George Lutz in thesupernatural horror filmThe Amityville Horror (2005)—an adaptation of the1977 novel and remake of the1979 film of the same name.[65][66] He portrayed a man who moves into a supposedly haunted house with his wife, Kathy (Melissa George), and her children.[67] Reynolds's performance was praised by critics, withCollider's Shawn Van Horn stating that he was "funny and charming, but toned down, as if he's not performing for a camera".[68] Reynolds then starred as a charismatic waiter named Monty inRob McKittrick's comedyWaiting... In 2008, Reynolds played Frank Allen inChaos Theory, directed byMarcos Siega.[76] He portrayed a highly disciplined efficiency expert whose marital crisis prompts a shift towards an unpredictable and spontaneous lifestyle.[77] Critics acknowledged Reynolds's performance even though the film itself received poor reception, withThe Seattle Times commenting that he "has the sort of blandly dazzling[...] It's a fine performance; too bad it's lost in a muddled movie."[78] His next role was in the romantic comedyDefinitely, Maybe (2008), in which he played Will Hayes, a man in the middle of divorce proceedings who is questioned by his daughter about how he and her mother first met.[79] InFireflies in the Garden (2008), he played a successful novelist who returns to his family in theMidwest, only to learn that his mother has died in a tragic accident.[80]

2010–2015: Genre experimentation and career fluctuations
In 2010, he madea guest appearance on the children's television showSesame Street.[95] Reynolds's only film role that year was in the Spanish and American survival thriller filmBuried (2010), directed byRodrigo Cortés.[96][97] He played the role of Paul Conroy, an American truck driver in Iraq who finds himself buried alive in a coffin and must find a way to escape.[98]Buried garnered significant commendation from critics, with a segment of Rotten Tomatoes' consensus noting it as a "nerve-wracking display of [...] Reynolds' talent".[98] He played thetitular character inMartin Campbell's superhero filmGreen Lantern (2011).[99] The film was a critical and commercial failure, underperforming at the box office and receiving negative reviews.[100][101][102] Reynolds played Mitch Planko inDavid Dobkin's romantic comedyThe Change-Up (2011).[103][104] The film received negative reviews, but both Reynolds and co-starJason Bateman received praise for their performances.[102][105] Reynoldsexecutive-produced and narrated the documentary filmThe Whale (2011).[106]
In 2012, Reynolds starred alongsideDenzel Washington in the action thrillerSafe House, directed byDaniel Espinosa.[107] Set inCape Town, South Africa, Reynolds played Matt Weston, a CIA agent. Hissafe house is breached by mercenaries afterTobin Frost (Washington) is captured, forcing them to escape and find another house.[108] While the film received mixed reviews,[109] Reynolds's performance was praised by many critics, withThe Hollywood Reporter describing it as "surprisingly well acted"[110] andIGN highlighting it as a "terrific performance that is sure to be a highlight in his[...] career".[111] He made a cameo appearance as Jared in the comedyTed (2012).[112] In 2013, Reynolds had starring voice roles in twoDreamWorks Animation feature films. Reynolds played Nick Walker inR.I.P.D. (2013), a detective murdered by his partner.[117] The film was abox-office bomb and was panned by critics; Rotten Tomatoes' consensus agreed that it was "too dim-witted and formulaic to satisfy".[118][119] He took on several roles in thehorror comedy filmThe Voices (2014), starring as Jerry Hickfang, a factory worker withschizophrenia who hears voices from his pet dog and cat, both of whom he also voiced.[120][121] In 2020, Reynolds described the film as "one of my favorite movies I've ever done[...] never really got its day in court, but man, it's weird and fun and beautiful".[122] In the psychological thrillerThe Captive (2014), he portrayed Matthew, a father who is determined to locate his nine-year-old daughter who has been missing for eight years, after police discover a clue on the Internet.[123][124]The Captive generally received negative reception, withVanity Fair describing it as "[director]Atom Egoyan's[...] weird disappointment that's painfully reminiscent of his earlier, better work".[123]
Reynolds found significant critical and commercial success with the superhero filmDeadpool (2016),[133][134] which had been in development since as early as 2000.[135] Following his portrayal of Wade Wilson / Weapon XI inX-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), Reynolds became heavily involved in the development of a film based on Deadpool.[136] The film introduced areboot of the character, dismissing the events ofX-Men Origins: Wolverine and establishing a new backstory that aligns more closely with the originalMarvel Comics.[137][138][139] Reynolds chose not to get paid forDeadpool to ensure the film's release and used the small amount he did receive to have co-writersRhett Reese andPaul Wernick on set with him.[140][141]Deadpool was a commercial success, grossing $782 million, making it theninth-highest-grossing film of 2016.[142] Several critics praised Reynolds's performance inDeadpool,[143][144] with Michael O'Sullivan fromThe Washington Post praising Reynolds for making Deadpool a likeable character as well as the film's action scenes.[145]
Reynolds had a supporting role inAriel Vromen's action thrillerCriminal (2016).[146][147] He played Bill Pope, who is tortured and killed early in the film while travelling to a secret meeting with a hacker capable of launching missiles at will.[147][148] The film received negative reviews from critics.[149][150] The following year, Reynolds reunited with Espinosa, playing the engineer Rory Adams in the science fictionLife (2017).[151] It received mixed reviews from critics but performed well at the box office.[152][153] Reynolds next starred inPatrick Hughes's action comedy filmThe Hitman's Bodyguard (2017).[154] He played the role of Michael Bryce, anexecutive protection agent and former CIA officer hired to protect assassin Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson).[155][156] Critics praised the performances, action sequences, and the chemistry between Reynolds and Jackson, though some felt the film had aclichéd plot and execution.[157] Filming for a sequel toDeadpool started in June 2017 and led to the release ofDeadpool 2 in 2018.[158][159][160] The film became a commercial success, grossing $715 million and becoming theninth-highest-grossing film of 2018.[161]

Reynolds next starred in Levy's science fiction action comedyThe Adam Project (2022), portraying Adam Reed—a time pilot from 2050 who risks his life to uncover the truth regarding his wife's disappearance.[174][175] The film received generally mixed reception, withIGN's Ryan Leston commending Reynolds's performance.[176] In October 2021, Reynolds announced he was taking "a little sabbatical" from his work after the production ofSpirited (2022), a Christmas musical comedy.[177] In August 2024, Reynolds and his wife,Blake Lively, became the first married Hollywood couple sinceBruce Willis andDemi Moore in 1990 to have separate films leading the box office on the same weekend. In January 2018, Reynolds expanded into business ventures by launching the production companyMaximum Effort and signing a three-year first-look deal withFox.[183][184] In January 2018, it was announced that a live-action adaptation of the board gameClue, written byDeadpool screenwriters Reese and Wernick, was in development.[185][186] On June 23, 2021, Maximum Effort's marketing division was spun off into a separate company and acquired by MNTN Software.[187][188] Reynolds has used Maximum Effort to create advertisements for his film projects and brands likePeloton andR. M. Williams.[189]
In February 2018, Reynolds acquired a stake inAviation American Gin, taking a role of overseeing the brand's creative direction.[190][191] He later purchased an ownership stake inMint Mobile in November 2019, holding between 20% and 25%.[192][193] David Glickman—founder of Mint—and Reynolds both served on the board of directors forthe Michael J. Fox Foundation, and Glickman was impressed by Reynolds's marketing efforts forDeadpool.[194] In 2020, Reynolds joined the board ofMatch Group[195] and later sold Aviation American Gin toDiageo in a deal valued at up to $610 million.[196][197]
In September 2020, theWrexham Supporters Trust announced that a business partnership comprising Reynolds and fellow actorRob McElhenney was in talks to purchase the Welsh soccer clubWrexham.[198] Their takeover was confirmed in November 2020, receiving approval from theFinancial Conduct Authority in February 2021.[199][200][201] The two embracedWelsh culture, promotingits language in their media projects and receiving the Diolch Y Ddraig award from Welsh broadcasterS4C.[202][203][204] Reynolds asked that Welsh subtitles be included with his Netflix movieRed Notice (2021), which was also advertised within Wrexham.[205] The process of Reynolds and McElhenney's investment in Wrexham was covered in the television documentary seriesWelcome to Wrexham (2022–present).[206][207]
Reynolds has also invested in several companies, includingWealthsimple,1Password andFuboTV.[208][209][210] In 2022, he briefly pursued ownership of theNational Hockey League'sOttawa Senators but withdrew his bid in the middle of 2023.[211][212] He later became part of an investor group that acquired a 24% stake in theAlpine F1 Team.[213][214] In March 2023,T-Mobile announced its acquisition of Mint Mobile in a deal worth up to $1.35 billion.[215][216] In April 2023, Canadian payments technology companyNuvei announced that Reynolds had invested in the company, although the details of the scope of the investment have yet to be disclosed.[217]
Philanthropy and activism
In May 2020, Reynolds joined a group of celebrities in reading an installment ofRoald Dahl'sJames and the Giant Peach (1961) to support the global non-profit organisationPartners In Health, co-founded by Dahl's daughterOphelia, in its efforts to combatCOVID-19 in vulnerable areas.[218][219] In July 2020, Reynolds and broadcasterGeorge Stroumboulopoulos each offered $5,000 for the return of a stolen teddy bear belonging to a Vancouver woman.[220] TheBuild-A-Bear, which contained a recording of the woman's deceased mother saying "I love you" in Filipino, was recovered within a few days by two individuals.[221] Reynolds expressed his support forsame-sex marriage in an interview and has advocated for increased representation ofLGBTQ+ characters in film.[222][223]
Reynolds is also an environmental activist.[224] He supports the Michael J. The production ofIt Ends with Us (2024) becameembroiled in controversy due to conflicts between Lively and the film's director,Justin Baldoni.[269][270] According to Lively, Reynolds wrote a significant portion of dialogue for a rooftop scene featuring her in April 2023 without Baldoni's knowledge.[271][272] Speculation about a rift between Lively and Baldoni grew on social media, particularly onTikTok, wherethe book of the same name had gained massive popularity within theBookTok community.[273]

Reynolds began dating singerAlanis Morissette in 2002 after meeting her atDrew Barrymore's birthday party, and the couple announced their engagement in 2004.[283] In February 2007, their representatives confirmed they had mutually decided to call their engagement off.[284] Morissette later revealed that her albumFlavors of Entanglement (2008) was inspired by the heartbreak of their breakup, with the song "Torch" specifically written about Reynolds.[285][286] Shortly after his breakup with Morissette, Reynolds began dating actressScarlett Johansson in April 2007.[287] The couple announced their engagement in May 2008[288][289] and married in September of that year in a private ceremony inVancouver Island.[290][291] On December 14, 2010, they announced their separation.[292][293][287] They both filed for divorce in Los Angeles on December 23.[294][295] Their divorce was finalized in July 2011.[296][297]
