Rusty Russell is an Australianfree software programmer and advocate, known for his work on theLinux kernel's networking subsystem and theFilesystem Hierarchy Standard.
Russell wrote thepacket filtering systemsipchains andnetfilter/iptables in theLinux operating system kernel.[2]Linus Torvalds referred to him as one of his "top deputies" in 2003.[3] In 2002, Russell announced the creation of the Trivial Patch Monkey, an email address for kernel hackers to submit trivial patches such as spelling errors, one-liners, documentation tweaks and other minor amendments to the code base. Adrian Bunk took over the role in 2005.In 2006[4] Russell started work as the major developer of the "lguest" virtualisation system in theLinux Kernel.[5] In October 2009, he was officially given a SAMBA Team T-shirt welcoming him to the Samba Team.[6] In 2014 he started pettycoin, acryptocurrency project.[7][8]Rusty Russell authored the majority part ofBitcoin'sLightning Network protocol specification.[9]
Russell conceived and conducted theConference of Australian Linux Users atMonash University in 1999, the forerunner of the annuallinux.conf.au conference series.
Russell isintellectual property advisor toLinux Australia and is active in advocating against and critiquing intellectual property elements of theFree Trade Agreement between Australia and theUnited States.[10] He was also a member of theLinux Australia committee in 2004.[11]
Russell was the recipient of the inaugural (andeponymous)Rusty Wrench award for service to the free software community atlinux.conf.au 2005.[12]
