When a neurologist's teenage daughter Rachel is killed, he secretly copies a recording of her personality into achimpanzee with amplified intelligence, and teaches hersign language; however, when he dies without having told anyone that Rachel lives on, the authorities transfer her to aprimatology research center.
"Rachel in Love" won the 1987Nebula Award for Best Novelette,[1] the 1988Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award,[2] and the 1988Locus Award for Best Novelette,[3] and was a finalist for the 1988Hugo Award for Best Novelette.[4]
