Pracchia is an Italian village and hamlet (frazione) of themunicipality ofPistoia, in theprovince of Pistoia,Tuscany. In 2011 it had a population of 268.[1]
Due to its position, the village hosted acustoms between theGrand Duchy of Tuscany and thePapal States. In 1524, the construction of the firstblast furnaces to manufacture ofiron fromElba island began.
The village is located in theTuscan-Emilian Apennine Mountains, lesser than a km from the borders ofEmilia-Romagna, betweenPistoia (26 km south) andBologna (81 km north). It is 1 km fromVizzero, 11 fromSan Mommè, 12 fromSan Marcello Pistoiese and 16 fromPorretta Terme.[2]
The settlement is crossed in the middle by the riverReno, that divides it into "Pracchia Alta" (Upper Pracchia) and "Pracchia Bassa" (Lower Pracchia). North of the village is located a zone named "Setteponti" (Seven Bridges), once known as "Mulino del Pillotti" (Pillotti's Mill), and the seat of the ancient customs.
The village is served by a station on thePorrettana railwayBologna-Pistoia.[3][4] It was the junction point of an abandonednarrow-gauge railway, theFerrovia Alto Pistoiese (FAP) Pracchia-San Marcello Pistoiese-Mammiano, dismantled after 1965.[5]
