Piroplasmida is anorder ofparasites in thephylumApicomplexa.[3][4] They divide bybinary fission and assporozoan parasites they possesssexual andasexual phases (sexual reproduction occurs in the tick gut[5]). They include thetick parasitesBabesia andTheileria.[6][7]

Description

[edit]

They are minute rounded orpyriform parasites found within erythrocytes, or other circulating or endothelial cells of vertebrates, where they reproduce bymerogony. Thetrophozoite stage is separated from erythrocyte by a single membrane. This distinguishes them from other blood parasites that usually have at least two membranes.

Anapical complex with a polar ring and rhopteries occurs, but without aconoid and usually without associated pellicular microtubules. They lackflagella and do not form eitheroocysts or spores.

The known vectors areticks orleeches in which they undergosporogony; sexual reproduction probably occurs in the vector.
