Pinguiochrysidaceae is a family of marineHeterokontophyta.[1] It is the only family in the orderPinguiochrysidales, which is the only order in the classPinguiophyceae. It includes five species of unicellular organisms with high concentration ofpolyunsaturated fatty acids in thecytoplasm.[1] The other common features are the lack ofcell wall and the tendency forflagella loss even on the stage ofzoospore, which is unusual for heterokonts.[1] One species (Polypodochrysis teissieri) inhabits benthic substates (sometimes found themucilage of other algae) and is able to producelorica with one or more tubular necks.[2] The other species live in theplankton.[1]
