Ping opera

Not to be confused withPeking opera, which used to be called Pingju.

Pingju orPing opera (Chinese:评剧;pinyin:píngjù) is a form ofChinese opera fromnorthern China.

History

Pingju originated inTangshan,Hebei, near the city ofTianjin.[1] Among all China's regional operas, it was the most famous in theRepublican period for its passionate performances and romantic plots.[2]

Movies based upon and incorporating Pingju includeZhang Shichuan's 1936Red Begonia(t海棠,s海棠,Hǎitáng Hóng), starringBai Yushuang.[3]

Performers

Bai Yushuang was known as the "Queen of Pingju". Other famed performers includeXin Fengxia[4] and her mentorHua Furong.[5]
