Photo-erosion is the dispersion of the outer layers of aprestellar core by theionizing radiation of a nearbyO-type orB-typestar.
This erosion prevents theaccretion of these outer layers around theprotostar at the centre of the core; and this, in turn, prevents the protostar frombecoming a fully fledged star. The protostar instead becomes abrown dwarf orplanetary-mass object.[1]
