Phillyrea is a genus of two species offlowering plants in the familyOleaceae, native to theMediterranean region, and naturalized in theCanary Islands andMadeira.[2]
They areevergreenshrubs or smalltrees growing to 3–9 m tall, related toLigustrum,Olea andOsmanthus. Theleaves are in opposite pairs, small, leathery, ovate to lanceolate, 2–6 cm long and 0.5–2 cm broad. Theflowers are small, greenish-white, produced in short clusters. Thefruit is adrupe containing a single seed.
A third speciesP. decora from theCaucasus is now usually treated in the genusOsmanthus asOsmanthus decorus. Over 200 other names have been proposed over the years, now considered synonyms of existing taxa.[2]
