Pharsophorus is anextinctgenus of borhyaenoidsparassodont that inhabited South America during theMiddle to Late Oligocene epoch.[1]
Originally,Pharsophorus was thought to be aborhyaenid, and was even considered to be the ancestor ofBorhyaena,Acrocyon, andArctodictis, but later phylogenetic analyses have shown that it is not a member of theBorhyaenidae and is only more distantly related to these forms.[2][3] Remains ofPharsophorus are known from theSarmiento Formation of the provinces ofMendoza,Santa Cruz, andChubut in Argentina, as well as theSalla Formation at the fossil site of Salla in western Bolivia.[4][5] The species"Pharsophorus" antiquus, formerly assigned to this genus, was eventually made the type species of a separate genusAustralohyaena.[6]
