Phagomyxids are a group ofobligateendoparasiticprotists belonging to the subphylumEndomyxa inCercozoa.[1] Taxonomically, they are united under a single familyPhagomyxidae, orderPhagomyxida, sister to theplasmodiophores.[2]
Phagomyxids are mainly parasites ofbrown algae,[3] but some can parasiteoomycetes.[4]
The group was created in 1993 byCavalier-Smith, when it contained only the genusPhagomyxa.[2] Since then,Maullinia, a genus previously inPlasmodiophoridae, has joined the phagomyxids.[4]
