Peter Cottrell

Peter James Cottrell (born 1964 ) is aWelsh[1] soldier,[2] sailor,[3] writer, educator andrevisionist military historian of theIrish War of Independence andIrish Civil War.[4]

Career

Cottrell is the author[5] of the best-selling military historyThe Anglo-Irish War: The Troubles 1913–23 which challenges traditional nationalist interpretations of theEaster Rising; the role of theRoyal Irish Constabulary and the popularity of theIRA campaign whilst supporting the view that the conflict was as much an Irish civil war as a struggle for independence from the UK.[6]

He grew up in the village ofKenfig Hill,Mid-Glamorgan inSouth Wales and between 1981 and 2008 served in the ranks of the BritishTerritorial Army and as an officer in both theRoyal Navy andBritish Army and saw operational service in theMiddle East,[7]Bosnia,Afghanistan andNorthern Ireland.

After qualifying as a teacher he was commissioned into theRoyal Navy in 1988 and transferred to theBritish Army in 1995, ending his military career as a Major.[8][9] He is a great-great nephew of the Englishrugby playerGeorge Cottrell, and a member of theRoyal Dublin Fusiliers Association.
