Percy Stanislaus McDonnell (13 November 1858[1][2] – 24 September 1896[3]) was an Australiancricketer who captained theAustralian Test team in six matches, includingthe tour of England in 1888.[4]
McDonnell was born inLondon in 1858, son ofMorgan McDonnell and his wife Frances Marie, née Bonham. In 1864 the family migrated toMelbourne, where he was educated atSt Patrick's College, East Melbourne andXavier College.[3] He played for theMelbourne Cricket Club First XI while still at Xavier, and made hisfirst-class debut forVictoria at the age of 17.[5]
McDonnell was an attacking batsman and his averages are among the very best of his era. His top Test score of 147[6] was made in a partnership of 199 withAlick Bannerman at theSydney Cricket Ground when the other 9 batsman in the team contributed 29 to the team score.[7]
In 1886/87, McDonnell became the first Test captain ever to win the toss and elect to field. He had mixed results. England were dismissed for just 45, but nonetheless won the match.[8]
McDonnell married Grace McDonald inSydney in April 1891. They had two sons. He died of cardiac failure at hisSouth Brisbane residence in September 1896, aged 37.[3][9] His funeral proceeded from his home to theToowong Cemetery.[10][11]
