Palaeopolis (in Asia) was a city in ancientLydia that was included in the lateRoman province ofAsia Prima. Itsbishopric was thus asuffragan ofEphesus, themetropolitan see of that province.

Its site is now near theTurkish town ofBeydağ.[1] Under theOttoman Empire, it was in thevilayet (province) ofİzmir.

History

The secular history of this city is unknown. In the 6th century AD it is mentioned byHierocles (Synecdemus 660, 4). It is found in theNotitiae Episcopatuum as late as the 13th century, among the suffragan sees of Ephesus.Le Quien (Oriens christianusI:729) mentions seven bishops of this city known by their presence at councils: Rhodon atEphesus, 431; Basilicus atChalcedon, 451; Eusebius at Constantinople, 536; George atConstantinople, 692; Gregory atNicaea, 787; Peter atConstantinople, 869; Julian atConstantinople, 879.

Titular see

No longer a residential see, the bishopric is included in theCatholic Church's list oftitular sees[2] since its nominal restoration in the 18th century as Paleopolis, renamed Palaeopolis in 1925, and finally in 1933 renamed Palæopolis in Asia, avoiding confusion with its Pamphylian namesake.

It is vacant since decades, having had the following incumbents of the lowest (episcopal) rank :
