Onet.pl is the largestPolish-languageweb portal and online news platform.[1] According to Digital News Report, it is the largest online news source in the country, reaching 42% Internet users every week.[2] It is also one of the most-quoted news media in Poland.[3]
It was founded in 1996 byOptimus company and is owned by theKraków-based Grupa Onet.pl S.A. According toAlexa rankings, as of October 2017, it was the 45th most popular website worldwide[4] and the 3rd most popular site in Poland.[5] As of December 2016, it is the 6th most visited website in Poland, 311th in the UK, and 375th worldwide.[6]
Ringier Axel Springer Media AG holds the majority of Onet since 2012.[7]
Among its services is a Polishonline encyclopedia, theWIEM Encyklopedia. It also has a licence forRebtel service (marketed in Poland as OnetRebtel) andSkype service (marketed in Poland as OnetSkype). Its other services includeemail,web hosting,Usenet access,web forums andonline chats.
Onet launched a clone ofCNN iReport called Cynk. Thiscitizen journalism project received between 20 and 30 news items a day, according to Michał Bonarowski, Onet's chief editor of publishing.[8]
Onet had hosted over 800,000 active blogs but in 2018, due to popularity of social media, the service was closed.[9]
