"Monadnock" is derived from theAbenaki language, and indicates a mountain surrounded by relatively flat terrain.[1] According to local tradition, the word "pack" is an Abenaki word for "little". Thus "Pack Monadnock" (Little Monadnock) refers to its relationship to the higher Mount Monadnock,[2] 3,165 feet (965 m), 11 miles (18 km) to the west. It should not be confused with the similarly named peakLittle Monadnock Mountain, 17 miles (27 km) to the west.
