Leonie Elva "Noni" HazlehurstAM is an Australian actress,director, writer,presenter, andbroadcaster who has appeared on television and radio, in dramas,mini-series, andmade for television films, as well also on stage and infeature films since the early 1970s. Hazlehurst has been honoured with numerous awards, includingAustralian Film Institute Awards,ARIA Awards andLogies, including being inducted into theHall of Fame in 2016.

Early life and education

Leonie Elva Hazelhurst, known as "Noni",[1] was born inMelbourne.[citation needed]

After attendingSt Leonard's College inBrighton East, Victoria, Hazlehurst studied Drama atFlinders University inSouth Australia from 1971 to 1973, where she resided atFlinders University Hall and graduated with aBachelor of Arts degree in 1974.[citation needed]

Both of her parents wereEnglish,[2][3] and they migrated to Australia in 1951.[4]

Along with roles at theABC, her first television work was in guest lead roles in television serials produced byCrawford Productions. She played the regular role of Sharon Lewis inThe Box in 1975 before joining the original cast ofThe Sullivans as Lil Duggan in late 1976. She was aPlay School presenter from 1978 to 2001, and has been a National Ambassador or Patron for many children's events and charities, including Children's Week (1991-2007)[5] and Barnardos.[6] She has worked extensively for children. Hazlehurst has recorded severalmusic andspoken wordalbums, including the children's music albumShout and Whisper (1988).

Hazlehurst appeared in theminiseriesNancy Wake (played the title role),[citation needed] as well as such films and miniseries asThe Shiralee,Ride on Stranger, andWaterfront in the 1980s.[citation needed]

From 1995 to 2005, she hosted theSeven NetworksBetter Homes and Gardens, a lifestyle show which is affiliated with the monthlymagazine of the same name.[citation needed]

In 2006, she starred inABC's telemovieStepfather of the Bride. From 2007 to 2011, she played Detective SuperintendentBernice Waverley on Channel Seven crime dramaCity Homicide. In 2010, she was a guest onThe 7pm Project onNetwork Ten. In July 2011, as part of a rapidly growinginternet meme, she read the bookGo the Fuck to Sleep to camera in the style she formerly used onPlay School. She immediately offered to record a reading of the book after being sent a copy by the publisher.,[7]

Beginning in 2013, she appeared as Elizabeth Bligh in the 1950s-set Australian melodramaA Place to Call Home on theSeven Network, playing the wealthy matriarch of the family.[citation needed] She played "Ambrose" in ABC TV'sThe Letdown (2017–2019),[citation needed] and as Pamela inThe End (2020).[citation needed]

Hazlehurst has had starring roles in Australian films since the 1980s, most notably as the lead, Nora, inMonkey Grip (1982), based onHelen Garner'snovel of the same name. The film, concerning the relationship between a single mother and a heroin addict, was a modest box-office success in Australia and received generally favourable reviews from critics.[citation needed]

She later starred inLittle Fish in 2005,Candy in 2006, andBitter & Twisted in 2008. Later film roles includeThe Mule,Truth,The Broken Shore, andLadies in Black.[citation needed]

Personal life

Hazlehurst married director Kevin Dobson,[9] and she subsequently marriedJohn Jarratt in circa 1987. She and Jarratt have two sons. After separating from Jarratt in August 1999,[10][5] she dated cameraman Ian Marden.[11]

Her son, William, is the former vocalist for Melbourne death pop band Storm The Sky.[12]

Noni released her autobiographyDropping The Mask on 2 October 2024 and promoted it with personal appearances and book signings through the month of October.[citation needed]
