The group plans to appeal, with a hearing set for April 2025. The group announced a break from all activities in March 2025.

Name

The group's original name "NewJeans" alludes to the idea that jeans are a timeless fashion item and the group's intention to carve a timeless image for themselves.[2] The name is also aword play on the phrase "new genes", referring to the group ushering a new generation of pop music.[3][4]

In 2025, the members changed their name to "NJZ" amid their contract dispute with Hybe.[5]

Preparations for a new girl group in collaboration between Hybe andSource Music began as early as 2019[13][14] whereMin Hee-jin was to be the creative director, after joining asthe chief brand officer that same year. Min was widely recognized for her art direction as visual director atSM Entertainment.[15] At the time of Min joining in 2019, it was revealed she would be the creative lead in multiple girl groups, excluding Big Hit, while a separate label would also be established later where she would be a producer.[16] Global auditions took place between September and October 2019.[14][17]Minji, a Source Music trainee, was featured in the promotional videos for these auditions. Various other auditions were held, and it was later revealed Hanni was the only trainee from the Plus Global Auditions to join NewJeans. Other members came from various backgrounds: Danielle was a formerYG Entertainment trainee, passing a separate Source Music audition in July 2020 whileHaerin was a trainee at another agency and was street cast at the end of 2019, officially joining Source in early 2020.[18] Hanni and Minji made a guest appearance inBTS's 2021 music video for "Permission to Dance".[19] All of the members then transferred to ADOR at the end of 2021.[20]

In late 2021, it was announced that the project moved to Hybe's newly established independent label ADOR, after Min was appointed the label's CEO.[21] A second round of global auditions were held between December 2021 and January 2022,[22] and the group's line-up was finalized in March 2022.[23][24] Dubbed "Min Hee-jin's Girl Group" by several media outlets,[23][25] the group was originally scheduled to launch in 2021 but was later postponed due to theCOVID-19 pandemic.[14]

2024–present: Conflict with Hybe, "NJZ", and ongoing hiatus

In April 2024, a shareholders' dispute between Hybe Corporation top executives and NewJeans' CEO Min Hee-jin broke out, with Hybe executives claiming that Min had plotted to gain full ownership of the group and Min claiming that the group had suffered unfair competition from Hybe's other girl groups.[90] The dispute led to Min's dismissal as CEO of ADOR on August 27.[91]

NewJeans in September 2024

Throughout the dispute, NewJeans' members supported Min, including a surprise YouTube livestream on September 11 where they expressed distrust and rebuttal of Hybe's management, detailing issues concerning workplace harassment, leaking of private information, and the deletion of previously released content.[92][93] They ended the broadcast by giving Hybe chairman Bang Si-Hyuk an ultimatum to reinstate Min by September 25.[94]Jon Caramanica ofThe New York Times described the NewJeans rebellion as a significant and rare labor dispute in K-pop, highlighting it as one of the highest-profile conflicts in recent years.[95] On September 25, Hybe rejected NewJeans' ultimatum to reinstate Min, citing their principle of separating management from production. However, they confirmed Min would remain NewJeans' producer.[96] Despite the conflict, Min expressed her commitment to NewJeans' future plans, stating she had a plan to overcome the challenges in an interview withTV Asahi.[97]

On October 15, Hanni testified as a reference witness during theNational Assembly's Environment and Labor Committee audit in South Korea, which focused on workplace harassment and artist protection in the entertainment industry. She accused Hybe and senior managers of undermining NewJeans and recounted discrimination faced by her group. ADOR's CEO, Kim Joo-young, also testified and pledged to cooperate with the investigation.[98][99] The case was later dismissed by the government agency, with the rationale that K-pop groups' members are not classified as workers and are not entitled to labor rights.[100][101]

NewJeans hosting a press conference on November 28, 2024

On November 13,Yonhap News reported that NewJeans' members sent a letter to ADOR, threatening to terminate their exclusive contract if major breaches were not rectified within 14 days. This move was prompted by a leaked internal document suggesting that Hybe wanted to discard NewJeans and the rejection of their request to reinstate Min Hee-jin as ADOR's CEO.[102] On November 28, the five members announced the termination of their exclusive contract with ADOR due to alleged violations of the contract's clauses, including artist protection.[103][104][105] On November 29, the members pledged to pursue activities independently and fight for the group's name rights.[106][107][108] ADOR refuted the alleged contract breaches, and stated that the members remain under contract obligations.[109] Attorneys stated that the members had fulfilled legal steps for termination, and that ADOR could file a lawsuit to contest.[110] The Korea Management Federation (KMF) and Korea Entertainment Producers' Association (KEPA) sided with ADOR, arguing that unilateral contract terminations harm industry principles and investments. KEPA called the members' actions "childish", while KMF urged them to retract their claim. Both federations have historically supported management companies in disputes.[111][112][113]

On December 5, ADOR petitioned the court to confirm the validity of NewJeans' contract and cautioned others against involvement, expressing their commitment to talk with the group members. In response, the members stated their contracts ended on November 28 and accused ADOR of harassing their collaborators.[114][115] On December 14, the five NewJeans members created a newInstagram account with the handle "jeanzforfree", separate from the existing official one run by ADOR.[116] Their first post shared details about offering free food and beverages to K-pop fans attending a rally inYeouido, Seoul, supporting theimpeachment of South Korean presidentYoon Suk Yeol.[117][118][119] ADOR has threatened legal actions regarding the new account.[120] On January 13, 2025, ADOR filed an injunction with the Seoul Central District Court to prevent the members from independently signing advertising contracts while their contract dispute remains unresolved.[121]

On February 7, 2025, the members announced a new group name, "NJZ".[122] Additionally, they were announced as headliners forHong Kong music festivalComplexCon under the new name.[5] Two days before the performance, ADOR was granted the injunction, prohibiting the group from conducting activities independent of the label.[123] On March 23, during their set, the members performed a new song titled "Pit Stop", a series of covers, and announced that they have decided to pause all their activities for the foreseeable future.[124]

Artistry

Musical style and lyrics

NewJeans's music spans genres such as R&B,electropop, andhip hop.[125] It is characterized by mellow beats, atmosphericsynthesizers, and live vocals.[126][127][128] Their debut EP and first single albumOMG are predominantlymidtempopop and R&B that evoke music of the1990s and2000s decades.[129][130] There were comparisons to the sound of late-1990s K-pop girl groups.[128][131][132] Music critics also identified elements of late-1990s and mid-2000selectronic anddance styles such asUK garage,[128][133]Baltimore club,[134]Jersey club,[135] andmoombahton.[132] With their second EPGet Up, they ventured more into dance andclub music with a morerhythmic production expanding on the group's UK garage-influenced past releases.[128] Meanwhile, with their "Supernatural" release, they explorednew jack swing anddance-pop with 250's interpolation of "Back of My Mind", a 2009 song by Japanese singer Manami which was produced byPharrell Williams.[136] TheHankook Ilbo aligned NewJeans' style with the "newtro" aesthetic due to the retro sensibilities;[137] the newspaper's music critic Choi Eun-soo characterized their sound as "easy listening" devoid of "explosive"EDM embellishments that had saturated the market.[131] Some critics, such as Sheldon Pearce and Joshua Minsoo Kim writing forNPR, described NewJeans's music as soft, contained, and delicate, which is a stark contrast to their contemporaries' "maximalist" and "harsh, buzzing" sounds.[128][135]The Guardian's Laura Snapes described their songs as "sleek and lethally hooky, yet playful and teeming with retro synths andexperimental flourishes".[126] Writing inThe Korea Times, scholar and cultural critic David Tizzard says that a lot of NewJeans' songs are influenced by 90s Britishjungle anddrum and bass. In particular, their 2024 track "Right Now" is "not classic jungle or drum and bass because it's more polished and eschews the grittier samples. This is catchy: a sleek earworm. Rather than being from theLTJ Bukem wheelhouse of London, the track is closer to something fromDJ Marky or theSambass subgenre."[138]

NewJeans's music is mainly produced by South Korean singers 250 andPark Jin-su (also known as FRNK), while the members often participate in songwriting.[126] The members have talked about being inspired by film and television, in particular by "high schoolteen dramas" likeClueless (1995),Mean Girls (2004), andThe Princess Diaries (2001).[139][140]Executive producer Min Hee-jin selects all NewJeans's songs and is responsible for the recording process.[141] Regarding the group's debut EP, Min said she "wanted to break the tacit formula of K-pop and make an album with the music I want".[142] Min disliked "high-pitched parts, awkward raps that suddenly appear, and singing methods that feel uniform" and chose to record withoutguide vocals, allowing the members to develop their own singing styles.[141][130] Pearce argued that NewJeans's frequent collaborations with certain producers brought forth a cohesive discography with distinct identity and aesthetic.[128]

Image and fashion

NewJeans has influenced fashion and make-up trends with their style, developed by Choi Yu-mi. Having previously met Min while working withShinee, Choi began working with Min and NewJeans in 2020, despite never having styled a girl group.[143][144] Min stated that she wanted NewJeans's image to be "cool, chill, and sophisticated".[145] NewJeans debuted with aY2K-inspired style that established them as "a symbol" of the Y2K fashion revival in South Korea.[146] The members wore "drastically" different outfits in the music videos to confuse fans, prompting them to rewatch the videos to identify the members.[147] For their hair and make-up, NewJeans worked with hairstylist Gi-hee and make-up artist Lee Nak-yeum, who developed a signature "natural" look for the group.[148][149] Azrin Tan argued inVogue Singapore that NewJeans presented a "new aesthetic", characterized by minimal soft make-up and straight black hair, that defied beauty standards in the contemporary K-pop industry with its simplicity.[150] Similarly, Jon Caramanica notes inThe New York Times that "The production is sensuous and restrained [...] NewJeans deploys its contemporary reference points in service of a throwback idea."[151] Their styling contributed in shaping NewJeans'sgirl-next-door image,[152] deemed by Tan a "stark shift away from the usually high-octane aesthetic" of contemporary K-pop groups.[150]

NewJeans branched out and showcased a variety of concepts in the music videos released forGet Up, including cheerleading and ballet-inspired outfits.[153][154] Since NewJeans's debut, Choi has incorporated in their style elements from several modern trends, such asgorpcore and blokecore, and designers, such asKiko Kostadinov,Martine Rose,Marine Serre, and Hyein Seo.[143][144] Edith Winslow ofVogue Australia has described NewJeans's fashion style as a combination of "bold pieces, contemporary designers, and the confidence to pull it all off".[155]The New York Times named them among the most stylish people of 2023.[156] In interviews, NewJeans have said they enjoy exploring different styles and expressing themselves through fashion.[157][158] The members' personal styles have also become influential, with Julian Bartolome ofInquirer Super saying they have "established themselves as modern-teen style icons".[159][160] All of the members have served as ambassadors for fashion and beauty brands: Hanni forGucci,Armani Beauty, andUGG, Hyein forLouis Vuitton, Danielle forBurberry,YSL Beauty, andCeline, Minji forChanel Korea, and Haerin forDior.[161][162]
