Neoponera verenae is a species ofponerine ant in thegenusNeoponera.[1]
There are only a few species ofNeoponera in which the workers lack erect hairs on the dorsum of the mesosoma (Neoponera magnifica,Neoponera bucki,Neoponera apicalis,Neoponera obscuricornis andNeoponera verenae). However, inNeoponera apicalis, the tips of theantennae has a yellow to light brown funiculus. To narrow down identification, onlyNeoponera verenae ,Neoponera apicalis and Neoponera obscuricornis have eyes that take up more than1⁄3 of the side of the head. The difference betweenNeoponera obscuricornis and Neoponera verenae is that the posterior lateral margins of the petiole ofN. verenae are sharp, those ofN. obscuricornis are broadly rounded.
