Murfie is a commercial music streaming service originally based inMadison, Wisconsin. Its members buy, sell, and tradecompact discs and stream or download their contents.[1] Additionally, members can digitize and storeCDs andLPs they sent from home to Murfie.[2][3]
Murfie was featured inThe Wall Street Journal,The New York Times,Fast Company,Time magazine, andNational Public Radio.[4]
Preston Austin and Matt Younkle co-founded the company.[3] Younkle left in 2015 and Rex Mangat, company CEO, departed in September 2019, shortly before the company ceased operations.[3]
In 2012, Murfie became a member ofTechstars.[5] In 2014, the company announced they had losslessFLAC streaming available onSonos devices.[6] In November 2019, it ceased operations,[3] until January 2020 when the site's assets were acquired by Crossies LLC. John Fenley is the owner of both Murfie and Crossies.[7]
When Murfie was shut down, disks were not returned. After accusation, Crossies committed to the project of returning collections to those who had entrusted the Madison company with their music.[7] Of the 750,000 discs held by Crossies, requests were received for only about 150,000.[7]
