It is located in the valley of the riverFecht, in theVosges mountains about 15 kilometres (9.3 miles) west ofColmar on the D417 road to theCol de la Schlucht andÉpinal.

The site of a 7th-centuryabbey ormonastery, which gave the place its name, it is famous for itscheese (theMunster cheese).
