Mu, ormy (/ˈm(j)/ ;[1][2] uppercaseΜ, lowercaseμ;Ancient Greekμῦ[mŷː],Greek:μι or μυ—both[mi]), is the twelfthletter of theGreek alphabet, representing thevoiced bilabial nasalIPA:[m]. In the system ofGreek numerals it has a value of 40.[3] Mu was derived from theEgyptian hieroglyphic symbol for water, which had been simplified by thePhoenicians and named after their word for water, to become𐤌img (mem). Letters that derive from mu include theRoman M and theCyrillic М, though the lowercase resembles a smallLatin U (u).

In Greek, the name of the letter was writtenμῦ and pronounced[mŷː].

Modern Greek

InModern Greek, the letter is spelledμι and pronounced[mi]. In polytonic orthography, it is written with anacute accentμί.[4][5]

Use as symbol

The lowercase letter mu (μ) is used as a special symbol in manyacademic fields. Uppercase mu is not used, because it appears identical to LatinM.

"μ" is used as aunit prefix denoting a factor of 10−6 (onemillionth), in this context, the symbol's name is "micro".
