Mohammed Berrid (Arabic:محمد بريظ,Standard Moroccan Tamazight:ⵎⵓⵃⵎⵎⴰⴷ ⴱⵔⵉⴹ; born 1955) is aMoroccan military commander.[1] He is a 43-year veteran of the Royal Armed Forces, having joined the Royal Armed Forces in the 1970s as an officer.[2][3]
Mohammed Berrid is the Inspector General of theRoyal Moroccan Armed Forces and the Commander of the Southern Military Zone.[1] He was appointed as Inspector General by KingMohammed VI in 2023, replacingBelkhir El Farouk.[4][5][6]
Mohammed Berrid was born in 1955 in the town ofEl Kbab, nearKhénifra.[1][3][7] He was born in theBerberAït Ichkern [fr] tribal confederation.[8][9] He is a graduate of the Armored Training Center at theRoyal Military Academy [fr] inMeknès, where he received training for theAMX-10 RC andM48A5 armored vehicles.[9][1] Berrid is also a graduate of the Royal College of Higher Military Education inKénitra.[3][8]
He received amaster's degree in national defense from France'sCollège Interarmées de Défense [fr] (Joint Defense College).[10][11]
Mohammed Berrid started his career as an officer in the 3rdArmored Squadron Group [fr] (now Royal Tank Regiment) inEl Hajeb.[9][3] He was transferred to the 4th Armored Squadron Group inAl Mahbes as a military commander in the 1980s, during theWestern Sahara War.[3][10]
Prior to his appointment as Inspector General, he was the director of the 3rd Office of the General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces since 2015 after serving as a Staff Officer in the field of training and employment of forces.[10]
Berrid is described as a "very discreet person, but very respected for his ability to work and his sense of selflessness" and as "particularly disciplined and severe in the application of military regulations".[9][3][12] He is married and has four children.[10]
