Matthew Weston Goss (born 29 September 1968) is an English singer-songwriter and musician. He was the lead singer of 1980s pop groupBros, which also featured his twin brotherLuke as the drummer.[1]
Goss was born on 29 September 1968 atLewisham Hospital, in theLondon borough ofLewisham. He is the twin and younger brother ofLuke Goss.[1]
The Goss twins, Matt and Luke and their friendCraig Logan were just schoolboys when they became famous in 1986.[1] They sold 16 million records worldwide, hit the number one spot with tracks includingI Owe You Nothing andWhen Will I Be Famous? and drove their fans wild with a hysteria dubbed "Brosmania".[1] Matt went on to become the youngest artist to headlineWembley Stadium, performing to 77,000 fans.[2]
Bros amassed millions of album sales, with their debut albumPush going 4× Platinum in the UK and peaking at number two. It remained in the UK charts for 84 weeks.[3]
In 1989, Bros won theBrit Award for "Breakthrough Artist" and they received the award fromRolling Stones,Ronnie Wood andBill Wyman.[4]
After announcing a one-off Bros reunion show in theLondon O2 Arena in 2017, tickets sold out in a record-breaking seven seconds.[5]
After the Bros band broke up, Luke became an actor and Goss continued in music with a successful solo career. Goss has released five solo studio albums. His latest,The Beautiful Unknown, reached number #7 in the UK album charts.[6][7][8]
As a solo artist, Goss has played in venues all over the world includingCarnegie Hall andMadison Square Garden NY,Wembley Arena, TheRoyal Albert Hall,The O2 Arena andWembley Stadium London.[9]
Goss wrote the theme songLovely Las Vegas for the TV stationFox 5 which was used for over 10 years.[10] He also wrote the theme songIt’s The End Of The Road for the American TV showSo You Think You Can Dance.[11][12]
Goss contributed to the soundtrack of the MovieStuart Little writing the songLucky Day.[13] Goss worked withPaul Oakenfold on the singleFirefly, which was remixed and reached #1 on multiple dance charts.[14]
After Bros split, Goss moved to America and in June 2009 it was announced that he would be headlining shows atThe Palms Casino inLas Vegas.[15] Within nine months, the show moved to the iconicCaesars Palace in January 2010.[16] The Vegas show was called the "Hottest Show in Vegas" by theLA Times.[17] It was brought to several UK venues, including TheRoyal Albert Hall andWembley Arena and Goss was called "The New Sinatra".[18]
Goss was also called "The New King of Vegas" byLas Vegas Review-Journal, a dailysubscriptionnewspaper published inLas Vegas,Nevada[19] and is considered one of the best male British voices withLA Times calling him "The Velvet voice".[20]
Goss was hailed as theBest New Act in Vegas, by theLA Times, whileVegasDeluxe called him "the leader of a new ratpack".[21]
In 2016, Goss won The SSE Arena Wembley award for best live show.[22] and 2018 he was awarded the key to the city of Las Vegas.[23]
In 2018, Goss was awarded, by proclamation of the city, "Matt Goss Day" on 8 August, which by coincidence is also his late mother's birthday.[24]
2018 saw the release of the 3 xBAFTA nominated and BAFTA winning documentary,Bros: After The Screaming Stops, which was about Matt and his brother's life. It premiered at theBFI London Film Festival.[25] It won "Best Documentary" at TheNational Film Awards and instantly received a 100% rating fromRotten Tomatoes.[26]
The film also won "Moment of the Year" at the 2019 BBC Radio & Music Awards.[27] Following a national theatre release, the movie went on to become the most downloaded BBC production in 2018 and has now been viewed over 20Million times.[27]GQ magazine said it was the "best music documentary of all time".[28]
In 2023, Goss embarked on his UK tour, which began at TheRoyal Albert Hall with theRoyal Philharmonic Orchestra and his 15 piece MG Big Band.[29] He performed his biggest hits, new original music and his own personal tribute to one of the greatest songwriters of all time,Cole Porter.[29][30]
As a brand ambassador, Goss was featured as one of the lead roles alongsideP. Diddy,Frank Vincent (Sopranos),Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad),Michael K. Williams (Boardwalk Empire) andChrissy Teigen in CIROQ's vodka American campaign which included a national print, billboards and TV commercial for 3 years.[31]
Matt has an extensive philanthropic portfolio.[32] He was awarded the prestigiousUnited Nations Humanitarian Award, for his continued contribution with charity endeavors which include,Susan G.KomenFight Against Cancer.[33][34] Goss wrote and performed Susan G.Komen's anthemStrong and spearheaded the hashtagStrong initiative with them. He sang to over 50,000 people inTime Square NY to support the fight against cancer and also 100,000 people in LA.[35]
In early 2020, Goss recorded his version ofIf I Aint Got You, which was produced byBabyface. The song was released as a fundraiser for theNational Health Service (NHS) during theCovid pandemic.[36] His efforts resulted in supplying thousands of meals for first responders.[37]
Due to his continued work for the troops and their mental health around the world, Goss was made an honorary captain in the 17th Special Battalion. On 7 June 2021, he was awarded theRoyal Society of St George medal.[38]
