Manu antiquus is aspecies ofextinctbird ofuncertain affinities from theOligocene of New Zealand. It wasdescribed byBrian Marples in 1946 from fossil material (part of afurcula) found nearDuntroon, northOtago, in theSouth Island. Marples suggested that it might be an earlyalbatross; subsequent researchers have speculated that it could be apelagornithid; however, its affinities remain uncertain. The genus nameManu isMāori for "bird"; the specific epithetantiquus isLatin for "old" or "ancient".[2][3]
