Lower Assendon is a village in the Assendon valley in theChiltern Hills, about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) northwest ofHenley-on-Thames inSouth Oxfordshire, England. The road between Henley andWallingford passes the village. It was made into aturnpike in 1736 and ceased to be a turnpike in 1873.[1] It is now classified theA4130. The village has apublic house, The Golden Ball, that is now agastropub.[2]Henley Park is just east of the village. It was amedieval deer park and in 1300 became part of themanor of Henley.[3] In theGeorgian era the park was converted into alandscape garden with"beautiful inclosures descending in natural waving slopes from the house."[4] Fairmile Cemetery, on a hillside southwest of the village, belongs to Henley Town Council.
