Llazar Siliqi (1924–2001) was anAlbanian poet. His poetic profile was influenced by the work ofMayakovsky.[1]

Biography

Siliqi was born inShkodër, the son of the Albanian poet and nationalist figureRisto Siliqi. He was first cousins withDrago Siliqi.[2] He was an active participant of theAlbanian resistance during World War II, was arrested and interned in theNazi concentration camp in Pristina, today'sKosovo.[3]

Siliqi was the librettist of the first Albanian opera,Mrika, composed byPrenkë Jakova,[4] as well asGjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu (Scanderbeg) of 1969, an epic-heroic work written to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Scanderbeg, Albania's national hero, with music from Jakova as well.[5]

Siliqi is also known for the epic-narrative poemPrishtina (Pristina) of 1949, dedicated to the Pristina Nazi concentration camp during World War II,[3] and for the screenplay of the movieKomisari i Dritës (Commissar of Light) of 1966.[6]

A long time member of theAlbanian League of Writers and Artists, he participated in theOrthography Congress of 1972 where the orthographic rules of theAlbanian language were standardized, and was one of the signatories.[7]
