Further information:History of Iraq andKingdom of Iraq

In theaftermath of World War I and thedissolution of the Ottoman Empire, the three provinces (vilayets) ofOttoman Iraq came under the control of the United Kingdom. UnderBritish occupation, the people rebelled and Iraq showed itself a hard land to govern. In order to establish a pro-Britishclient regime, a dynasty of Hashemite kings from theHejaz region was established, beginning withFaisal I who was the son ofHussein bin Ali. As a family originating in theHejaz, theHashemites was foreign to Iraq. TheBritish Government appointed them as Iraq'sroyal family after aplebiscite in 1921.[1] The Hashemites were largely opposed by theIraqiShiites andKurds. TheKingdom of Iraq existed until anIraqi nationalistcoup d'état in 1958 known as the14 July Revolution established theIraqi Republic.
