Larry Eugene Hendricks III[1] (born April 8, 1991), known professionally asLarry June, is an American rapper fromSan Francisco, California.[2] He is best known for his albumsOrange Print (2021),Spaceships on the Blade (2022), andThe Great Escape (2023), and has toured with musicians such asCousin Stizz,Berner,Curren$y, andPost Malone.[3][4] June has released 19underground projects, and is currently an independent artist, having previously been signed toWarner Records.[1]
Larry Eugene Hendricks III is originally from San Francisco'sBayview Hunters Point neighborhood, specifically Harbor road (also home to RBL Posse and Prezi).[5] He was born to teenage parents.[1] At the age of five, he moved toAtlanta, Georgia, where he stayed until the age of 15, though he would return to visit family in San Francisco every summer. After middle school, June attended high school atJesse Bethel High School inVallejo, California.[6] His father dabbled in rap, which influenced June. He would distributeCD's with his music to schools in his area, and found a breakthrough after selling his music to aRasputin Music store inBerkeley. June later dropped out of high school to focus on making music.[1]
As a teenager, Hendricks usedMySpace -- to collaborate with musicians like G-Eazy back in 2006[7] -- and YouTube, where he listened to instrumentals from producers likeCardo in 2008. Years later, he collaborated with both musicians.[8] Larry released "Cali Grown", his first album in 2010.[9]
In 2014,Complex posted June's mixtape Route 80 withTM88. Following the exposure inComplex, he was signed toWarner Records, with the label giving him a $20,000 advance in exchange for twoextended plays with the option for more records.[1] According to June, Warner failed to show interest in his work, which led him to stop recording music for two years. He instead toured the US, opening forPost Malone andSmokepurpp.[1] June released numerous tracks in 2016, including the full-length mixtapeSock It to Me.[10] Warner eventually released him, and he created an account withDistroKid, releasing the projectsYou're Doing Good,Sock it to Me, Pt. 2 and Very Peaceful.[1] As an independent artist, he made more profit from his music streams.[1] He also released the EPsLarry andOrange Season, both of which were produced byCookin' Soul.[11] The release ofOrange Season was accompanied by an iOS game of the same name, inspired by Nintendo's early era 8-bit graphics.[10] He also toured with Cousin Stizz in 2016 and was featured on Stizz's songDown Like That as well as Malone's singleNever Understand.[2][3] Additional collaborations in 2016 include rapping withAsher Roth and Michael Christmas on the track "Laundry".[12]
In 2020, during theCOVID-19 pandemic, he recorded at his home studio, releasing six projects, includingAdjust to the Game, Cruise USA, Numbers, and Keep Going.[1] In early 2021, June launched the Honeybear Boba in San Francisco.[1]
On June 11, 2021, June releasedOrange Print, a project that "displays every bit of his persona".[1] The release marked his first to be distributed throughEmpire Distribution, after he stopped releasing independently through DistroKid.[1] Speaking toThe Ringer in May 2021, June said he would consider a major-label record deal if the opportunity comes, but is not rushed about it.[1]
Logan Murdock ofThe Ringer wrote about June's craft: "IfE-40 is rap's model of independence, June is hip-hop'sJack LaLanne, and he's primed to transformBay Area rap. He has a mouthpiece likeMac Dre and the soul ofRBL Posse, with a mission to make it on his terms, even if celebrity doesn't necessarily follow.[1] June is known to rap about "passive income", and has said he does not consider his music to portray him as a "lifetime coach", but instead wants to help those from the streets who are trying to make a healthy income.[1] Among his most usedad-libs are "Yee-hee", inspired byMichael Jackson, and "Good job, Larry", stemming from his ascent in the industry.”[1]
Outside his career as a musician, June plans on releasing his own brand of oranges based on a suggestion from a friend whose family owns a farm.[10][13] On his social media promotions, June ends his sentences with an orange emoji.[1]
