Straight U with stroke (Ұ ұ; italics:Ұ ұ), is a letter of theCyrillic script.[1] InUnicode, this letter is called "Straight U with stroke".[1] Its form is theCyrillic letter Ue (Ү ү Ү ү) with a horizontal stroke through it.
Kazakh Short U is used only in thealphabet of theKazakh language,[1] where it represents thenear-close near-back rounded vowel/ʊ/, like the pronunciation of the⟨oo⟩ in "book".[2] In other circumstances, it is used as a replacement for the former letter[clarification needed] to represent theclose front rounded vowel/y/ in situations where it would be easily confused withCyrillic У у.[citation needed] It isromanized as⟨ū⟩ in Kazakh (2021 reform).
