KWBG (1590AM) is anews/talk/sports-formattedbroadcastradio station.[5] The station is licensed toBoone, Iowa and servesBoone andStory Counties inIowa.[1][3][4] KWBG is owned and operated by Fieldview Broadcasting, LLC.[1][2]
The station began broadcasting January 15, 1950, and ran 1,000 watts, during daytime hours only.[7][9] It was originally owned by Boone Broadcasting Co.[9] The following year, the station began nighttime operations, running 500 watts, utilizing a directional array.[9] In the early 1970s, the station was sold to E. G. Wenrick and Kenneth Kilmer.[9][10][11] In 1980, KWBG and its sister stationKWBG-FM were sold to a group headed by general manager[12] Dennis Borwick for $508,476.[9][13] In 1986, KWBG and its FM sister station were sold to KZBA, Inc. for $606,344.[14][15] In 1989, the station was sold to G.O. Radio, Inc. for $400,000.[16]
In 1993, the station's format was changed fromadult contemporary tocountry music.[17] By the late 1990s, the station was airing a farm news-talk format.[18] In 1999, the station was sold to Waitt Radio.[18][19] Fieldview Broadcasting took ownership of KWBG in 2018.[20][21] In 2019, KWBG received theNational Association of Broadcasters' Crystal Award.[22][23]
