KHPE (107.9FM, "Hope 107.9") is acommercialradio station inAlbany, Oregon, serving theWillamette Valley. It is owned by Extra Mile Media and airs aChristian Contemporaryradio format.[2] For much of November and December, the station switches toChristmas music, performed by both secular and Christian music artists. The studios are on Santiam Highway SE (U.S. Route 20).
KHPE is aClass C station with aneffective radiated power (ERP) of 100,000watts, the maximum for most FM stations. Thetransmittertower is on Northwest Cardinal Drive at Nettleton Road inLewisburg.[3] The signal coversCorvallis,Lebanon,Salem, andEugene–Springfield,Oregon. Programming is also heard in Eugene-Springfield on 250-wattFM translatorK245AA at 96.9 MHz.
KWIL 1240 AM hadsigned on the air in 1941. It decided to add an FM station to simulcast its programming. The first KWIL-FM began broadcasting on October 15, 1947, on 101.7 MHz.[4] But few people owned FM receivers in that era and management saw little opportunity to make the station profitable. It wasdeleted fromFCC records on August 21, 1956.[5]
In the late 1960s, KWIL, now at 790 AM, decided to try adding an FM station again. The new KWIL-FM began broadcasting at 107.9 MHz, on January 12, 1969; 56 years ago (1969-01-12). KWIL had been a long-time religious broadcaster and KWIL-FM used the same format, although with a different programming schedule.
In 1972, the station took on a differentcall sign, KHPE. The letters stood for the word "Hope." Over time, theChristian talk and teaching programs were reduced, replaced byChristian Contemporary music, more suitable for FM listeners. The station sells advertising time but also accepts donations from listeners on its website.
